My 5-month French Bulldog pees inside and is now afraid. What to do?

Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. Bo is still quite young and him urinating inside is something that he should eventually grow out with training. Positive reinforcement with treats whenever he urinates outside and defecates outside will help reinforce him going outside. I've had great success with recommending Fresh Patch. This is a patch of grass in a cardboard box with absorbent material underneath the grass and you place this in the house. Bo will use this real grass to go to the bathroom short term. I would recommend starting by placing the grass in the area where he has been urinating and then gradually moving the patch of grass closer and closer to the door to the outside until eventually the grass patch is outside of the house and he is using it there. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend that you do not spank her as dogs respond much better to positive reinforcement. This means that she would probably respond better to you rewarding her positive behavior such as when she does it outside. You can use praise and treats. It is basically focusing on the positive instead of the negative. You will start noticing that she will go outside more and inside less. This works consistently usually. Have Bourbon examined by your vet to rule out medical causes such as UTI or congenital defects affecting his urinary tract. At his age, expect to Bourbon to still have "accidents". Reinforce crate training or choose one method of training and stick with it. If you choose the crate, it should only be big enough for Bourbon to stand, turn around and lay down. He can be crated for a maximum of 3 hours (age in months + 1 hour) before needing to go out. This includes overnights. Put him on a consistent schedule for going outside. He goes outside FIRST thing in the morning. Pick a spot outside and wait. No walks until he goes. Praise and reward him when he goes. Place him back in the crate or on a leash attached to your hip so you can watch for his cues to go. This may be circling, whining or sniffing around. Do not leave Bourbon unsupervised until he is house trained. He will need to go about 30 minutes after eating or playing. Take up the water 2 hours before bedtime and take her out right before bedtime. Be patient. Be consistent.

Please do not ever, ever rub your dog's nose in his pee or poop. He has no idea what you're doing and why. Also, he does not "throw a temper tantrum." Kids do that; dogs don't. Put him on a leash and take him outside to his designated spot. Do not walk around. Just stand there and repeat "go outside" or a similar phrase. As soon as he starts to go, repeat "go outside" and praise "good dog!" as he goes. When he is finished, or if it appears that he is not going to go, bring him inside but do not remove the leash, even if he has done his business. Attach it to your belt loop and keep him with you. Don’t let him out of your sight! When you see him start to circle or sniff, take him right outdoors again and repeat the process. If he does mess in the house, do not scold him unless you actually catch him in the act. In that case, say "NO!" and take him right outside. Tell him to "go outside" and praise as he finishes. If he does do his business in the house and no one is right there to correct him, he will have no reason to believe that he is doing something wrong. Keep him in a crate at night, or for short periods when you are not at home. If you continiue to have problems with this, you can click on the prompt to start a consult.

Don’t feel bad about leaving him crates overnight - dogs like to be in an enclosed ‘den’. I think your best bet is to continue crating him through the night for another 3-6 months and then tying to give more freedom. You might want to try just leaving the door to the crate open at that point instead of changing his sleeping area which might disrupt his routine a little.

Four months is a very young age still and one where I wouldn't expect Fendi to be completely potty trained. That said, she should still be able to hold it about an hour or two, and if she can't, then scheduling a vet visit to make sure there isn't a health issue related first is a good idea. If she checks out healthy, sticking to a strict potty training routine is best. This means going out every 1-2 hours, after waking, eating, drinking, playing, etc to give her opportunities to go outside. If she is pottying in her kennel, it may be too big for her (it should be just big enough to comfortably lay down and turn around in, but not so big she can potty on one side and lay on the other.) Blocking off the house so she has limited access and limited chance to have an accident can also help.
