Is my 12-year-old dog peeing inside due to age or fear of punishment?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The easiest way is by using the pads and the training spray which makes them identify where they should urinate. I usually recommend that at the beginning you start by adding pads in just one place in the house so that they get used to urinating in only one spot. This usually works very well. Positive reinforcement is of course also important so giving her treats when she does go in the pad is very important so that she associates going in the pad with something positive. Good luck!

Spanking is never recommended as a form of training. Ideally, Paco should be physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose any underlying medical cause for his behavior. Once medical causes have been ruled out, you can focus on behavioral issues. Consider crate training Paco to "remind" him he shouldn't do his business inside. The crate should be just big enough for him to stand, turn around and lay down. If he isn't on a schedule for going outside, start one. Dogs thrive on routine and he may respond favorably to a schedule. Don't leave him unsupervised indoors. Use a leash and attach it to your hip. Watch for his cues to go such as circling, whining or sniffing about. If possible, restrict access to the bathroom or other areas where he is going. Use an enzymatic cleaner, such as Nature's Miracle, to thoroughly clean soiled areas. When he goes outdoors, have a small treat ready and praise/reward him consistently when he does his business in the appropriate place.

H, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sadly if she is is going in the house she still isn't fully house trained. All rooms with doors should be closed and she needs to be gated to be kept in your site. Or she needs to be leashed to an adult until this behavior has stopped. The area she is soiling needs to be cleaned with an enzymatic pet cleaner, like Nature's Miracle. She needs to be take out frequently and verbally praised, as well as given treats, when she goes outside. Play with her for 5-10 mins. If she doesn't go outside she is crated or leashed to an adult until you take her out again. This training should go on for 3 months and she can have free reign of the house once there are no accidents for those 3 months. You can have her urine checked for crystals or infection by your Vet and consider having her spayed to see if that helps. I wish you the best!

The best way to do this is by increasing the frequency of the walks and when Bogo finally goes outside, you should praise her and give her a treat so that she associates doing it outside with something positive. She will learn that this is the correct thing but it will take time and patience. Best of luck!

Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. Bo is still quite young and him urinating inside is something that he should eventually grow out with training. Positive reinforcement with treats whenever he urinates outside and defecates outside will help reinforce him going outside. I've had great success with recommending Fresh Patch. This is a patch of grass in a cardboard box with absorbent material underneath the grass and you place this in the house. Bo will use this real grass to go to the bathroom short term. I would recommend starting by placing the grass in the area where he has been urinating and then gradually moving the patch of grass closer and closer to the door to the outside until eventually the grass patch is outside of the house and he is using it there. If this is a relatively new problem, Nikki may have an underlying medical condition - like a urinary tract infection. I suggest you have her examined by your vet and have a urine test done to check for infection or other underlying medical problem. If you can rule out a medical problem then you can assume it is behavioral, in which case, you should consult with a professional, in-home dog trainer. It is very hard to potty train a dog this age without professional help.

Sometimes as a dog ages they develop something called cognitive dysfunction (like dementia) where they forget their training. This may be the cause of Tot's accidents. A supplement like Senilife may help withi this. Pain and arthritis can also lead to accident in an older dog as they have a harder time going outside and positioning to go to the bathroom. Sometimes urinary tract infection, internal medical issues or digestive problems may also cause accidents in the house. A visit to your Veterinarian may help to sort out what the cause of Tot's accidents are. Until you are able to take him to the vet you may want to take him outside more frequently to avoid accidents.
