My Frenchie wakes early when not crated. How to hold potty?

Hello. Crate training takes time, so keep persevering. That being said, expect dogs to be able to hold their bladders the number of months they are in terms of hours, as a general rule. They can hold it a little longer at night. Expect to have to wake up in the middle of the night to let him outside. Bring him outside, let him pee, then right back inside into the crate. No playing or else he will get used to that. The whining and barking should subside soon. HAve fun with him!

Some dogs have their own schedules and they are pretty stubborn about it! You could try going on a long walk 30 minutes after eating, sometimes that will stimulate the bowels. But otherwise, he probably just needs some more time to adjust. Make sure when you take him out in the middle of the night, that it is "boring" for Walter. Let him out, then take him back to bed. No talking or playing or treats.

Punishing doesn’t help to teach him. He may not be fully trained yet and still have an occasional accident. I would encourage you to keep him on a leash and tethered to your belt. Good question! A dog should not be crated for longer than eight hours at a time, so you can wake up to let them out to potty and then go back to bed, or you could start having them sleep outside the crate. Good luck, I hope this helps!

At her age, she isn’t able to sleep through the night. As she gets older this will improve. A few suggestions is to play with her really hard until right before bed. Also, take up her water and food about an hour before bed so she has plenty of time to digest that and go to the bathroom. Do not leave food and water with her at night. You can put a sound machine, a soft playing radio, ticking clock, or even the tv to help soothe her. You will need to plan to get up with her at least once a night for a few more weeks. This will really depend on the individual dog some dogs at young age are potty trained and well behaved and some dogs never get to that point. My first dog stayed in carate for 6 months and my second stayed for 6 years. It is all based on the training and how you all want to train/manage the dogs.

Four months is a very young age still and one where I wouldn't expect Fendi to be completely potty trained. That said, she should still be able to hold it about an hour or two, and if she can't, then scheduling a vet visit to make sure there isn't a health issue related first is a good idea. If she checks out healthy, sticking to a strict potty training routine is best. This means going out every 1-2 hours, after waking, eating, drinking, playing, etc to give her opportunities to go outside. If she is pottying in her kennel, it may be too big for her (it should be just big enough to comfortably lay down and turn around in, but not so big she can potty on one side and lay on the other.) Blocking off the house so she has limited access and limited chance to have an accident can also help.
