My dog is quiet during her first heat. Is she in pain? Can I give her meds?

It is possible but since Piper can’t talk, and I can’t preform a physical exam, I can’t say for sure. Back pain, gut pain or a bladder infection are all possible. I recommend to be safe and have her seen by her veterinarian. If she checks out normally, a heating pad applied to her lower abdomen may help-make sure it’s not too hot though, pets can get burned! She may though become less playful perhaps at the beginning though she should come around fairly quickly. If no improvement is observed, have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Typically the first period is often the hardest for pets; however, very rarely do you need medication to help them get through. If she is sleeping but still eating, drinking and going potty normally, then I would recommend just a warm compress applied to her belly for 5-10 minutes twice a day, as needed for mild discomfort. She will start to feel better as her menstrual cycle progresses. A pets period lasts 1-2 weeks on average. Take care of that fur baby!

Normally, bitches in season do not behave very differently from their usual selves. Since it is her first heat, there may be a problem showing up that was not evident before her reproductive organs became active. Or, it could be something else altogether. Your best bet is to take her to the vet for a thorough exam to determine an accurate diagnosis and, if necessary, appropriate treatment plan.

Poor girl. Some dogs have a tougher time than others when it comes to their first heat cycle. However she does seem to bra late bloomer as most dogs have their first heat cycle around 6-10 months. If she is this ill I would recommend having her to examined by your vet to make sure she isn't having any complications or other underlying illness that's causing this. If she is found to have a ln abnormally intense heat cycle, then the vet can prescribe some safe pet friendly pain medicaiton for her to get for the next few days until the brunt of her menstrual cycle has passed. In the meantime I try placing a warm compress on her belly for a few minutes (be very careful not to leave on too long or you can easily burn your pets skin) to help ease some of the discomfort. hope she feels better soon!

You are correct that Panda could start going into heat suddenly, as female dogs can start their first heat any time after six months. If you don't bland on mating Panda, I would get her spayed as soon as possible.

Seasons in dogs are usually not related to low energy levels and lethargy. If you also noticed that Brava is drinking excessively and is off food you should take her to your vet to make sure that she doesn't have uterine infection. Regarding pain relief- we don't think that seasons are painful to dogs so we generally don't recommend pain killers for that.
