My dog is quiet during her first heat. Is she in pain? Can I give her meds?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 8 months old | 23.5 lbs

My dog started her first period yesterday and I'm noticing she's a lot quieter. Could it be her pain? Can I give her anything to make her pain go away?

Pain is not common during a dog's heat cycle, however hormonal changes can cause some behavioral changes in dogs while they are in heat. If she is appearing in pain or is having odd symptoms in addition to her heat cycle it is best to have a veterinarian exam her. Do NOT give any over the counter medications without veterinary instruction as they could harm or make Panda very ill. If you do not wish to have puppies, having Panda spayed after her heat cycle is finished may be beneficial.
