Why is my epileptic Saint Bernard vomiting, weak, and losing weight?

Pet's info: Dog | Saint Bernard | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 88 lbs

I have a saint bernard, 2 yrs old suffering from vomiting and loose motion since 1 week, lethargy, weight loss. We are giving him phenobarbitone since 3 months for epilepsy.

Oh my. That is bit long for any dog to have vomiting and diarrhea. There are so many diseases that can cause these symptoms including: kidney disease, pancreatitis, liver/gallbladder disease, etc. Shadow needs to see a veterinarian right away for a proper exam, bloodwork and potentially x-rays to pinpoint what the underlying illness is. Once we know what we are dealing with, the correct treatment can be recommended to hopefully get Shadow well again. Excessive vomiting and diarrhea is very taxing on any pet and that alone can lead to severe dehydration, weight loss, and overall illness. So its best to get him seen right away for proper treatment. Until you can get him in try offering him small amounts of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese that is easily digestible and sensitive on the stomach. Hopefully he will get well soon with proper treatment. Best of luck.

His lack of appetite may be linked to the seizure episodes or of course it could be due to many other things such as pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, among many other possibilities. It seems like his seizures are not completely controlled at the moment. It would be a good idea to let your veterinarian know as other seizure medications can be added to his anti-seizure medication protocol. Some of the diagnostics that can be considered to work up the lack of appetite is bloodwork and abdominal imaging, among other diagnostics. Good luck and have a good day! I am sorry to hear that your dog isn’t feeling well. Many different problems can cause the signs your are seeing. These include Addison’s disease, kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and exocrine pancreatic Insufficiency , and even cancer. EPI is common in shepherds and this could certainly happen in young dogs. Ideally an examination and blood work should be done by a veterinarian for a diagnosis. If that is the problem then adding pancreatic enzymes such as Prozyme and feeding a bland diet such as hills i/d can make a big difference. Best of luck and I hope you get an answer soon. My dog is losing weight, vomiting, and has diarrhea. What to do?

I am concerned that something serious is going on with your dog. I understand there may be no vets nearby but I think in this case ironworks be worth making a trip to a nearby city or town to seek out help. Vomiting and diarrhea together is commonly referred to as gastroenteritis. There can be several causes for gastroenteritis such as metabolic issues, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites and a foreign body/blockage. Because this has been going on for a while and your dog is losing weight I would recommend taking your dog to the vet to be evaluated. Your vet may recommend blood work and X-rays to figure out what exactly is going on. Your dog may need fluid if dehydrated, nausea medication and antibiotics. I hope this helps. Why is my dog's belly gurgling with vomiting, diarrhea, and pacing?

I'm sorry to hear about Shadow! The stretching and pacing is a sign of abdominal pain. This could be something as simple as gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) caused by eating something naughty. This may be especially true if he only vomited a few times and has since stopped. However, this could also be something very serious such as pancreatitis or an intestinal blockage (especially worrisome if he is known to eat toys, socks, rocks, or other non-food items). If he is not fully vaccinated, parvovirus is also a life-threatening possibility. Because of these possibilities, I strongly recommend you see your vet. This is especially true if the vomiting has lasted for more than a few hours or is very frequent. I hope this helps! Best of luck to you and Shadow!

Why is my St. Bernard vomiting bile, losing hair, not eating?

I would recommend a broad spectrum deworming to see if that helps. Then, if it hasn’t been done yet I would run some blood work. If that is normal then I would encourage you to have her stomach and intestinal tract biopsied. Are you planning to spay her? If so I would recommend discussing the possibility of obtaining biopsy samples at the time of spay. This is something I have done frequently.
