Why is my dog having seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, and losing weight?

Oh my. That is bit long for any dog to have vomiting and diarrhea. There are so many diseases that can cause these symptoms including: kidney disease, pancreatitis, liver/gallbladder disease, etc. Shadow needs to see a veterinarian right away for a proper exam, bloodwork and potentially x-rays to pinpoint what the underlying illness is. Once we know what we are dealing with, the correct treatment can be recommended to hopefully get Shadow well again. Excessive vomiting and diarrhea is very taxing on any pet and that alone can lead to severe dehydration, weight loss, and overall illness. So its best to get him seen right away for proper treatment. Until you can get him in try offering him small amounts of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese that is easily digestible and sensitive on the stomach. I am sorry to hear that your dog isn’t feeling well. Many different problems can cause the signs your are seeing. These include Addison’s disease, kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and exocrine pancreatic Insufficiency , and even cancer. EPI is common in shepherds and this could certainly happen in young dogs. Ideally an examination and blood work should be done by a veterinarian for a diagnosis. If that is the problem then adding pancreatic enzymes such as Prozyme and feeding a bland diet such as hills i/d can make a big difference. Best of luck and I hope you get an answer soon. I would be very concerned with Izzy having this many seizures in such a short period of time. Young, small breed dogs can suffer from a condition called a shunt. With this disease the liver is unable to filter out toxins like it normally would. When this happens and the levels of certain enzymes get too high they affect the brain and cause seizures. This happens more frequently after a meal. I would recommend having Izzy checked out by your vet. They will likely run a blood test to check her liver enzymes and a test called bile acids to see how well the liver is working. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this in your young pup! Hopefully you can get a diagnosis and start managing her seizures soon.

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear that Luna is having this problem. There are many different things that can cause seizures - it's certainly possible that she may have epilepsy, but other possible causes would include a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, a central nervous system problem such as meningitis or a brain tumor, or exposure to some type of toxin. Bloody diarrhea is not a sign of epilepsy and is not normally associated with seizures in general, so this may be a separate problem. I would recommend taking Luna to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to. He/she can do a complete neurologic exam and may also recommend blood work or other testing if needed to help determine what is causing her seizures. If she does have epilepsy, your veterinarian can prescribe medication to help control her seizures.

I am concerned that something serious is going on with your dog. I understand there may be no vets nearby but I think in this case ironworks be worth making a trip to a nearby city or town to seek out help. Vomiting and diarrhea together is commonly referred to as gastroenteritis. There can be several causes for gastroenteritis such as metabolic issues, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites and a foreign body/blockage. Because this has been going on for a while and your dog is losing weight I would recommend taking your dog to the vet to be evaluated. Your vet may recommend blood work and X-rays to figure out what exactly is going on. Your dog may need fluid if dehydrated, nausea medication and antibiotics. I hope this helps. IT sounds as she is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, it could be a chronic infection, intestinal worms or something more serious such as IBD. you need to take her to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked and treated.

It is common for them to lose their appetite when they have a gastrointestinal disburance. Considering she has diarrhea, she is likely battling an infection, or food intolerance that is also making her feel nauseous. This may be due to another problem like a foreign body, or intestinal worms. Diarrhea is a common problem and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It doesn't appear to be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Abby has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating (i.e. will not even eat treats) or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can often help them get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good), but if she won't eat her normal food, then this may not work. Feed small portions (1/2 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. I hope this helps and Abby gets better soon.
