Epileptic dog not eating, losing weight, bad breath after seizure?

Oh my. That is bit long for any dog to have vomiting and diarrhea. There are so many diseases that can cause these symptoms including: kidney disease, pancreatitis, liver/gallbladder disease, etc. Shadow needs to see a veterinarian right away for a proper exam, bloodwork and potentially x-rays to pinpoint what the underlying illness is. Once we know what we are dealing with, the correct treatment can be recommended to hopefully get Shadow well again. Excessive vomiting and diarrhea is very taxing on any pet and that alone can lead to severe dehydration, weight loss, and overall illness. So its best to get him seen right away for proper treatment. Until you can get him in try offering him small amounts of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese that is easily digestible and sensitive on the stomach. Hopefully he will get well soon with proper treatment. Best of luck.

Two seizures in a 24 hour period are considered "cluster seizures," which generally require anti-epileptic (anti-seizure) medications. The post-ictal (after seizure) period can last for many hours, or even a day, and can cause many subtle behavioral changes and could even affect Blue's appetite. At this point, Blue should be examined by her vet. The vet will perform a neurologic exam and full physical exam, and may recommend blood work. Based on these results, medications may be prescribed. Until you go to the vet, try tempting Blue with canned dog food, meat-based baby food, or boiled white meat chicken and rice. I hope that she's feeling better soon!

Hello. The seizure may have been from a low blood glucose ( sugar ) level. Make sure Malone eats 3 good meals a day & if he skips a meal, have some Karo Syrup or Nutrical ( available at all pet stores ) on hand & give him 1/2 - 1 teaspoon to give him a sugar boost. If he continues to have seizures, even after eating well & on a regular basis, please have him evaluated for other causes of seizures. I hope he is doing better soon. It is not uncommon to have 24 Hours of lethargy and “post-ictal” behavior especially after a cluster of seizures such as JJ experienced. However, it is also possible that he has something more concerning going on in his brain causing the seizures and lethargy such as encephalitis or cancer. If the behavior or seizure events continue then I would encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian to discuss further diagnostics and possible anti seizure medication. I'm going to assume that your question is what should you do about this, and I'm going to assume that this is a dog. Without knowing the cause of the seizures - i.e. Epilepsy, brain tumor, menigitis, etc - it's really difficult to know what could be going on. Most epileptics will continue to have seizures occasionally, even on anti-seizure meds. But what you're describing - lack of appetite, no water consumption, and not acting normally - are all signs of a possibly serious problem. So please take your dog to see a vet as soon as possible.

I also do not like the fact that he randomly goes off eating. This could be secondary to all of his issues and not a big deal. Your vet can certainly run so additional blood work to make sure nothing else is going on. Or you could also get a referral to see a veterinary neurologist to run additional testing if needed. I would also talk to your vet about keeping some appetite stimulants on hand to help get him back to eating quicker than 2-3 days. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry that Layla is having seizures. Lethargy, stumbling, excessive sleepiness and decreased appetite can all be caused by seizure activity. The brain undergoes an enormous amount of electrical stimulation during a seizure and can take a while to recover. If by the morning she's not improving, I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian for evaluation. They may recommend blood work to look for possible underlying causes of the seizures. Depending on the frequency and severity of her seizures, they may also recommend that anti-seizure medications are started. I hope this helps and that Layla gets feeling better soon!
