My dog's poop is yellow/orange after diarrhea meds. Vet needed?

I agree that this poop is quite a bright color yellow! This is not normally caused by metronidazole, so it's hard to say why it might be happening. Poop can sometimes be yellow or orange in color, and it may not mean anything in particular... so I wouldn't necessarily be concerned unless it stays this was for several days in a row, or she's having other symptoms of a problem. If she's still acting normal and this stool is improved vs. yesterday (which I'm assuming it is, since it definitely looks better than bloody diarrhea!) it should be okay to continue on her meds as prescribed by your vet, and monitor for the next few days. If her stool is not back to normal within the next 3-5 days, or if she develops other new symptoms in the meantime, then I would recommend having her rechecked by your veterinarian.

The color of the stool is usually associated with something they are eating, but the yellow/orange color can sometimes be associated with liver disease. Since Marley does not seem to be responding to previous medical treatments, I would recommend that you discuss additional diagnostics with your vet. I would start with an intestinal parasite screening, and if that is negative, move on to bloodwork and/or a GI panel (specialized bloodwork). Occasionally all labs can be normal and surgical or endoscopic intestinal biopsies are needed.

Hi and thanks for your request. This may be still due to partial gastrointestinal upset, meaning that the gastrointestinal system is still recovering. I would recommend to continue to feed Milo with this diet until feces are not back to normal colour and consistency. If the signs last more than a week time a check up at your local vet will be required.

I'm glad to hear that Romeo is playful and eating well! It sounds as though he's on the road to recovery. Don't worry - it's completely normal for dogs to go several days without having a bowel movement after experiencing diarrhea. However, if you see that he's straining to poop but can't go, or if he becomes lethargic, vomits or refuses to eat, those would be signs that he should be re-checked by his vet. The only way to know if he has a fever is by using a thermometer rectally. If he'll tolerate it, you can use any digital thermometer and insert it just half an inch or so into his rectum. A normal body temperature for dogs is 100.5 F to 102.5 F. That said, since he's eating and playing normally, and the diarrhea has subsided, there really isn't a need to check his temperature. Antibiotics are often used in bloodied diarrhoea in young pups to prevent bacterial infection spreading to the blood stream and are continued until the bowel has a chance to repair (5-7days). Antibiotic resistance is a higher risk if short or low doses are used

Oh no, poor Sam! The red color could be blood, while the yellow could be due to irritation in his GI tract or may be pieces of a foreign body. I would have Sam seen by a vet for this problem, and bring along as sample of his feces if possible. The vet can diagnose what is causing his diarrhea and the color of his feces, and can treat him as needed. Please bring him into a vet as soon as possible since he's been having diarrhea for three days.

Radar needs to be examined by the veterinarian again. When pets don't respond to treatment as expected, it can mean that the real cause of illness has not been identified. Likely Radar needs other diagnostics which could include an ultrasound, a fecal culture, giardia testing, a different antibiotic or a diet trial with a hydrolyzed protein diet trial. I hope they figure out the problem quickly.
