My puppy has bright orange diarrhea on antibiotics. Should I stop?

Riley’s stool looks a bit soft. This may be be from being on doxycycline as antibiotic associated diarrhea is fairly common. Your vet may be able to dispense a probiotic such as FortiFlora or Proviable that can help return the stool to normal. The blood may be due to stress colitis. Typically, metronidazole (flagyl) is an anti-inflammatory antibiotic for the gut that recommended for blood tinged soft stool, however as she just finished a course of antibiotics, putting her on probiotics and a plain boiled rice and chicken diet (unless she has an allergy to chicken) or a prescription Hills intestinal diet or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal diet for 3-5 days may be enough to allow the irritated intestinal mucosa to heal. Hello, chloramphenicol is associated with vomiting and diarrhea as a side effect. However there are other causes in puppies for bloody diarrhea including worms and vieuses.i would consider visiting the ER if he is having more then 2 episodes of the diarrhea during the day. Hope this helps.

If the abovementioned diagnostic tests in combination with the treatments your described were mostly unsuccessful, the next step moving forward would be diagnostic imaging with x-ray and/or ultrasound to further investigate the problem. X-rays would provide a gross picture of the size and shape of the organs, and would show us any extremely obviously issues such as a large mass. Ultrasound imaging would give us a more detailed image of organ architecture, fluid movements, intestinal contractions, and quality of ingesta. Exploratory surgery of the GI tract with biopsies is also another more invasive option if the issues become more severe and worrisome. Other options for diagnostics, typically only available at specialty facilities include endoscopy with biopsy, and CT scan. Hope this helps.

Anesthesia can cause these symptoms along with the stress of the stay but that antibiotic can be a factor also. If he is eating and drinking fine with only a small amount of blood at the end of the BM then you can monitor for anything further. If it is diarrhea with blood through out then I would get him seen. You can always try boiled chicken and rice as this is bland and easy to digest. You may need to add canine probiotics while in antibiotics. You may want to talk to your vet about a different one that is easier on the stomach

Hello, thank you for your question about Romeo. It is possible that the color change could be secondary to one of the medications as these can often lead to change after digestion in the GI tract. If the diarrhea continues in spite of these treatments I would recommend having Romeo rechecked by your veterinarian so that they can consider adding additional medications such as an antibiotic/anti-diarrheal such as metronidazole. It is possible that she could be having a sensitivity to the antibiotic or this could be another complication to her upset tummy. I would make sure you are feeding her a complete meal then wait 15-20 minutes befor giving her the antibiotics. Also you may want to try feeding her only plain chicken (no bones) and rice as This is bland and easy on the tummy for recovery. If This doesn’t help then I would talk to your vet about a recheck. Your vet may want to give her an anti-nausea medicine, change her antibiotics or take X-rays if indicated. I hope this helps!

This can be caused by imbalance of the bacteria in the gut due to the antibiotics, if they have been given for another condition. This can also be caused by severe parasitic infections, bacterial infections, and conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. I recommend having Oliver seen by the vet who prescribed the antibiotics, as they may recommend a probiotic to add to his treatment, or discontinue/switch the antibiotics.
