Why is my dog's poop yellow after metronidazole for diarrhea?

Hi! I would say that it is likely ok. Sometimes it takes a bit longer to see results. If it is just soft and Snowball is otherwise fine, I would just give it a few days before getting concerned. Keep in mind that metronidazole is not always a curative medication for diarrhea but rather an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties that help with colitis. This means that it will not treat an underlying disease every time. Perhaps try a few days on a bland diet mostly composed of boiled chicken or turkey and rice. If no resolution within a few days, it may be appropriate to start her on a probiotic or try a different medication such as Tylosin. Best of luck with her!

Hello. If this is what his poop looks like now, I would not worry just because it was a little off color & smells. The medicine is probably doing this. As long as he continues to eat & drink, have normal, formed stools, finish his antibiotics as prescribe by your veterinarian & hopefully Billy will continue to do very well. Hello, thank you for your question about Romeo. It is possible that the color change could be secondary to one of the medications as these can often lead to change after digestion in the GI tract. If the diarrhea continues in spite of these treatments I would recommend having Romeo rechecked by your veterinarian so that they can consider adding additional medications such as an antibiotic/anti-diarrheal such as metronidazole. If you are seeing diarrhea or vomiting while on this antibiotic I would recommend discontinuing the drug and contacting the prescribing veterinarian to discuss this further. Not typically. Metronidazole does not have any listed side effects like that. Some common side effects are: Nausea or vomiting. Diarrhea. Drooling. Gagging or regurgitation. Loss of appetite. Lethargy or fatigue. Blood or darkening of urine. Fever. So, If the stools are very dark brown that is not really a problem, but black, that is serious and you should call your vet. Black typically means there is bleeding somewhere in the GI tract. If he is straining to defecate he may be constipated but straining can also be from diarrhea (if the stools are very soft/watery). I really don't have quite enough information to be helpful so I think it is probably best if you call your vet. Hi there. In my experience, it often takes 48 hours or so to see improvement in diarrhea after starting metronidazole. Full resolution of the problem may take another 2-3 days from there. So if Jake's diarrhea seems to be improving and his appetite is better, this is a good sign. I would continue with the current treatment plan prescribed by your veterinarian. If his diarrhea has not resolved in another 2-3 days, then I would recommend taking him back in for a recheck to see if some other type of treatment is needed.

This may not be unusual. Pets with diarrhea will often flush out the distal colon and it can take 2-3 days before the stool is present again in the colon. Make sure Figlio is eating well and acting normal. This is generally a good indication that he is recovering as expected. If he does not have a bowel movement after 3 days or if he seems to be feeling ill again, have him re-examined. Daily walks will help the bowels to move as well. Lastly, make sure he is drinking plenty of water. I hope this helps and that he continues to recover well.
