Why is my 4-month-old puppy's diarrhea red and yellow? Is it serious?

If Hachi is eating and drinking normally and still active and playful, you could try deworming him with a broad-spectrum dewormer such as Panacur or Strongid, and feeding a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next few days to see if his stool returns to normal. If there is no improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if he has any other symptoms such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not wanting to eat, then he needs to see a vet right away as these are generally signs of a more serious problem.

The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including a change in diet, bacterial over growth, parasites or other even parvovirus. Chaw is very small and I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian today. Small puppies can become very sick very fast and so need aggressive, early intervention. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. We don't normally see the parasites with the naked eye, so tests in the vet clinic must be done to test for the parasites. If your puppy becomes lethargic, starts vomiting, or has bloody diarrhea these can be signs of a virus called Parvovirus and the puppy should be seen by the vet right away.

These signs may be compatible with a persistent colitis. If no improvement is seen within 48hours of the new chicken and rice diet a check up at your local vet would be needed as antibiotics are in these cases required.

He could have eaten something else that is disagreeing with him now though! Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, virus, toxins, food sensitivities.red or blood in the feces indicated inflammation in the colon. You can try a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice about 1 cup per 20lbs per day until 1-2 normal stools. If vomiting starts or the diarrhea doesn't improve I recommend you take him to the Veterinarian. Good luck!

Hello, thank you for your question about Romeo. It is possible that the color change could be secondary to one of the medications as these can often lead to change after digestion in the GI tract. If the diarrhea continues in spite of these treatments I would recommend having Romeo rechecked by your veterinarian so that they can consider adding additional medications such as an antibiotic/anti-diarrheal such as metronidazole.
