Why does my dog have yellow diarrhea with white balls on a bland diet?

Hi there Persistent diarrhea is one thing we take pretty seriously in our pets. It would be helpful to know if Winnie has been dewormed lately and if she has been vaccinated. Your vet will likely need to do a fecal exam to make sure what you are describing isn't parasites, first and foremost. It is less concerning with her overall seemingly good health but I would still encourage you to do it soon. I hope this helps!

His poop is bright yellow b/c of his current diet (just rice and cottage cheese). He should have some protein in there, so I would suggest adding chicken or ground turkey. Also as long as he is not straining to poop, there is no cause for concern for the fewer stools, especially since he isn't eating anything with much substance. As long as he is acting normal, there is no major cause for concern here. Slowly transition him back to his normal diet once your vet says he is good to do so, and his stools should return to normal. That is not an unusual sign and could be due to an inflammation/infection of the last part of the intestine (likely colitis). Anal glands could be inflamed and impacted as well. As these signs are often dietary related related, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. I'm sorry to hear Brodie is not doing well. I would definitely change him back to chicken and rice but I would go ahead and take him in since its been 3 or 4 days of an abnormal stool AND he vomited. They will likely check him for parasites and prescribe medications to calm his GI tract. Better to get in under control sooner rather than later. Hope Brodie feels better soon!

Since it has been 4 days, an exam with your veterinarian would be strongly recommended. Abdominal x-rays may be indicated after a physical exam. A bland diet can be offered in small, frequent amounts if a vet visit is not possible at this time. If symptoms persist or worsen though, then she will need to be seen by your vet.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, it looks like Snowy is having some diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by a number of things, ranging from dietary indiscretion (he ate something he shouldn't have), diet change, gastrointestinal parasites (worms), or other organ system diseases like liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, etc. I recommend feeding Snowy a bland diet such as boiled (unseasoned) chicken or hamburger and rice, in a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part meat, for the next 3-4 days, to help firm up his stools. You can also try adding in a small amount of Metamucil (original, unflavored) powder to this food. Metamucil is an over-the-counter fiber supplement for people that we often use to help dogs with diarrhea. He would likely benefit from about 1/4 teaspoon of Metamucil in his food twice a day. If you are not noticing an improvement in his diarrhea after 2-3 days, I recommend bringing him (and a sample of his stool) to your veterinarian. At that time, a fecal analysis can be performed, and any other diagnostics as needed. I hope this is helpful! Best of luck with Snowy!

There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few days I would continue to monitor them at home. Rest their gastrointestinal tracts by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I also find that boiled, mashed skinless sweet potato is helpful for diarrhea. If they do not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhea, you notice fresh blood, they seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian.
