My dog has dark, jelly-like poop. Is this diarrhea? What should I do?

This could be from intestinal parasites or dietary related. I would bring a fecal sample in to a veterinarian and have them check for intestinal parasites so that the most appropriate treatment can be given. If the stool is negative for parasites then I would begin a bland diet of chicken and rice until the stool returns to normal and then transition back over a 7 day period to a different dog food such as science diet or royal canin. I recommend offering a bland diet such as boiled chicken and rice (in a ratio of 1 part meat to 2 parts rice) for the next few days to help bulk up his stool. You can also try mixing in 1/8 of a teaspoon of Metamucil into his food twice daily. This is a fiber supplement that can be purchased from a human pharmacy (purchase the original, unflavored kind). If his diarrhea persists for longer than a couple days, or if you ever see blood in the diarrhea, I recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian, as there could be a more serious underlying cause. Common causes of diarrhea include intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, infection, and in older dogs, cancer. The scooting may be due to irritation from the diarrhea, or due to full anal glands. Your veterinarian will be able to perform a physical and rectal examination and express his anal glands, if needed. I hope this is helpful!

In a young dog, it could be parasites, something odd he ate, or it indicates a sensitivity to something like an allergen. If he is feeling well, eating normally, then I would not be too concerned. If he has not had a stool check done, I would definitely have it evaluated by your veterinarian. He may need to have his diet changed, but I would not just start buying different puppy foods. I am very sorry to hear that your dogs are experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few days I would continue to monitor them at home. Rest their gastrointestinal tracts by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I also find that boiled, mashed skinless sweet potato is helpful for diarrhea. If they do not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhea, you notice fresh blood, they seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian. Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! I don't think you need to be super concerned with Diesel. I recommend starting him on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with rice. Feed him 3 1/2 cups per day until 2 normal stools. You can also start a probiotic. I like Purina Fortiflora. If the diarrhea persists, worsens, you see blood or he starts vomiting get him looked at by your Vet. However, if this does not resolve or progresses to watery diarrhea, a veterinary evaluation should be pursued. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Pepper evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi and thanks for your request regarding Chewy's problem. These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. A probiotic would help as well to speed up the recovery and re-establish normal bacterial flora. Pro-kolin could be a good option. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
