My dog has diarrhea and straining after eating a soccer ball. Vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Blue Heeler | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 35 lbs

My dog has had diarrhea and straining during pooping for the past four days. She is still eating, drinking, pooping (even though she struggles), and is acting completely normal. She did eat part of a soccer right before this started and we’re worried it might be stuck. Is it okay to feed her chicken and rice and just wait it out to see if it worsens or passes?

Since it has been 4 days, an exam with your veterinarian would be strongly recommended. Abdominal x-rays may be indicated after a physical exam.
A bland diet can be offered in small, frequent amounts if a vet visit is not possible at this time. If symptoms persist or worsen though, then she will need to be seen by your vet.
