My puppy's wound was cleaned with hand sanitizer. Is it safe?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 16 days old

My puppy has a small wound with blood. To clean it, my sister used hand sanitizer. Will my puppy become sick from the hand sanitizer? Since it was applied to a wound. Can it get absorbed through her skin?

Wash the area thoroughly to remove any residue, but there shouldn't be any problem unless he ingests a sizeable amount. The alcohol will disinfect and the aloe can help soothe it. I don't recommend using it in the future, mild soap and water is fine for cleaning minor wounds, just make sure to thoroughly remove all traces of soap so it doesn't irritate the skin..
