My dog has worms coming out of his belly skin. Is this possible?

Oh great question! I bet that worm was surprising. Likely this was a bot fly larvae called a cuterebra. Part of their life cycle is completed in the skin of a mammal, just as you found with Diego. Usually once it has fallen out (or removed), the body heals the wound and no other treatment is needed. Occasionally I find 2 or 3 lesions on an animal, but typically it is just 1. From the picture it it looks like some type of maggot. I am suspicious that he probably ate this and that it isn’t a parasite. However, if vomiting continues he should be evaluated by your veterinarian. Also taking in a fresh poop sample to look for intestinal parasite eggs. If you haven’t thrown the maggot away you can throw it in a zip lock bag and take it in with you as well. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

I would recommend having this examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - this sounds like it could be a skin tumor of some kind, but it could also be a localized bacterial infection or some other type of skin condition. He may need antibiotics to treat the problem, or even surgery to remove affected area if a tumor is suspected based on the exam.

Unfortunately, without being there, it would be hard to tell where the worm came from! If you suspect it may have come from your dog, bringing in a sample of his stool to your local vet can help them test for parasites such as worms and parasite eggs, and provide you with medication to treat it. If you see visible worms coming from your pup when he defecates, this can also indicate that he has a parasite infection. if you suspect the worm came from you, it would be best to seek the advice of a human medical doctor.

However, an abscess near the rectum would most likely be an anal sac abscess which are fairly common. Usually they are treated with local therapy including drainage and flushing as well as systemic antibiotics. Usually these are not caused by worms so if you truly saw worms it would be unrelated like if Lola also had intestinal worms. I recommend that you go to your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If you still have those worm-like substances you saw, I recommend you show them to your veterinarian. Good luck!

I'm not sure if that's a tapeworm or a roundworm (the two most common). I recommend to have Stitch examined by the veterinarian and have his stool checked for worms. if he has one type of parasite, he may have others. Because some types of parasites can spread to humans, it's important to know the parasite status and to make sure that all pets are treated completely and correctly. Oh goodness. That sounds really uncomfortable. It sounds like she really needs to see a veterinarian. The white worms you are seeing may be maggots in her infected skin. This could potentially become sepsic and be fatal. Please have her seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. I hope she improves quickly.
