My dog had a worm come out of his skin. What should I do after removal?

There is a parasite called a cuterebra that looks like a large maggot or grub that can be in the skin. These should be removed by a veterinarian. That is about the only worm I can think of that would come from the skin. What you are seeing may not actually be worms. Unless she is painful or lethargic, it can likely wait until the morning. Place an e-collar (cone) or a small t-shirt on her to prevent scratching, rubbing or licking. Do not squeeze or press the area. If you don't think she can wait, then by all meas have her seen at the nearest veterinary ER. If it is a cuterebra, it will need to be removed. If not, the wound will be cleaned and she will likely go home with antibiotics and pain medication (if indicated).

A cuterebra, or bot fly larva, could be underneath the skin but typically you would see a swelling and not be able to feel the larva underneath. Maggots or fly larvae can contaminate open wounds but you would see an obvious wound with the larvae present. There are no other types of worms that could migrate beneath the skin that would be in your area. It's possible that you're feeling something in the muscle. You might want to have your vet take a look to determine what it is that you are feeling.

This is suspicious of a bot infestation. This is a type of fly larva that lives under the skin and is very difficult to remove. You will need a veterinarian to surgically remove it and clean the wound, so I recommend scheduling a vet visit and let them know that you are suspicious of Cuterebra. It would help if you could upload a photo of the hole. Now, that you have removed the foreign body (egg) from your dog, the wound should heal. As long as there is no infection, purulent discharge or pain, you can just wait until it heals. If the hole does not heal within a few days, you may want to have the vet examine it. This may have been a pupa of a warble-type fly , although I do not know of any warble flies in the UK attacking dogs.

Hello. It would be very unusual to get a injection site reaction 2 weeks later, & for it to be down from the original injection site. My guess is this might be a benign fatty lump called a lipoma, so just schedule a visit with your veterinarian at your earliest convenience to check this out. If your dog is an older pet, then lipomas can be quite common. Hopefully, that is all it is & she should be just fine ( but I am sorry she was heartworm positive ). I would recommend having this examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - this sounds like it could be a skin tumor of some kind, but it could also be a localized bacterial infection or some other type of skin condition. He may need antibiotics to treat the problem, or even surgery to remove affected area if a tumor is suspected based on the exam.
