My puppy has white spots in his eyes. Is this normal or a problem?

It's a little difficult to tell from the pictures which layer of the eye the opacity is in, but I will discus the most common reasons for an opacity in the outermost aspect of the eye (the cornea). The first possibility is that if Lily had an ulceration of her eye, that the area could have scarred in which will result in tissue that is more white. I would have expected that you would have noticed that here eye was red, or she was squinting or tearing if that were the case. The most common reason that a corneal opacity will appear without any injury to the eye is actually a benign fat or cholesterol deposit. We don't know why some dogs develop them, but they tend to develop them in the other eye over time as well. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Lily to verify that is what they think is going on. If that is the case, then there isn't any reason for concern. If Lily's eye is red or if she is squinting or rubbing her eye, please have your vet examine her right away. I hope that was helpful and answered your question. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Spatsie! From your pictures, the affected area is either with in the anterior chamber or the corneal surface of the eye. It is not the lens so it is likely not nuclear sclerosis or a cataract. With glaucoma the eye is very red, enlarged, and painful. From your picture the sclera (white part of the eye) doens't apear red. Glaucomoa is diagnosed based on measuring the intra-ocular pressure of the eye with a tonopen or other device. My worry is that the white substance is white blood cells (hypopyon) with in the anterior chamber (which can lead to glaucoma). Corneal ulcers, corneal abscesses, uveitis, and systemic illnesses commonly cause hypopyon. The other possibility is a severe corneal ulcer. Spatsie needs to have his eye examined by a Veterinarian. This could be an inflammation of the sclera (episcleritis). At this time this does not look very dramatic or like an emergency as I cannot see other swelling which would point to more serious diseases such as glaucoma or an underlying autoimmune disease, however I would make an appointment with a veterinarian for an eye exam soon. It is not possible to diagnose this from a photo, and would need a proper eye exam. The cause of episcleritis (superficial inflammation of the sclera) or scleritis (full thickness inflammation of the sclera) is unknown, however toxins, autoimmune disorders and toxoplasmosis are accepted causes, In severe cases the vet may want to take a biopsy under anesthesia to distinguish between a mass and inflammatory tissue. Treatment may be necessary and would consist of corticosteroids and/or other immunosuppressants.

Thank you for including the picture, it is really helpful. The little bumps and the look of the lesion is starting to be suspicious of a mite called demodex mite. It is very common in puppies, and is not usually itchy (but it can be). A skin scrape should be done to look for the mites. Of Course other possibilities include skin infection or ringworm. It is usually a result of a scratch (self-inflicted or from other pet) or blunt trauma. It is very important to treat these problems promptly, as they potentially may turn into infected ulcer, which is a very serious condition of the eye. Please, take Jaanu to your local vets today if possible, to find out what is going on to start treatment right away.

I'm sorry to hear that Midnight has an eye problem! Without being able to examine his eye, or at least see a photo of what you're concerned about, I can't really say what this might be or what kind of treatment is needed. If you're seeing a spot on the surface of the eye, this could be a corneal ulcer, some type of localized mineral or fat deposit (corneal dystrophy), or possibly a scar from a prior ulcer or eye injury that has healed over. I would recommend having Midnight's eye examined in person by a veterinarian as a first step, to determine what it is that you're seeing. After that, your vet can advise you on whether treatment is needed and can prescribe appropriate medication to treat it if necessary.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lexi. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian as she may have a corneal ulcer. This is a scratch to the surface of the eye. It is very painful and causes the dog to squint, tear and possibly paw at the eye. Her veterinarian will place a drop of dye on the eye to test for an ulcer. If this is not the case, pugs are prone to condition known as pug keratitis. This is dark pigment that grows across the surface of the eye. I hope this information helps!
