My dog's eye has white discharge. Is it a cataract or something else?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is a little difficult to see due to the flash, but if the area is in the eye itself, it may be the beginning of a cataract. If you are referring to the area in the corner of the eye, closes to the nose, it is normal for the skin around the eye to have a little less hair. Cataracts are very common in dogs, especially as they get older but may be a sign of an underlying health condition such as diabetes. I recommend d having Cooper seen by a vet if you believe there is something abnormal about his eye. It's a little difficult to tell from the pictures which layer of the eye the opacity is in, but I will discus the most common reasons for an opacity in the outermost aspect of the eye (the cornea). The first possibility is that if Lily had an ulceration of her eye, that the area could have scarred in which will result in tissue that is more white. I would have expected that you would have noticed that here eye was red, or she was squinting or tearing if that were the case. The most common reason that a corneal opacity will appear without any injury to the eye is actually a benign fat or cholesterol deposit. We don't know why some dogs develop them, but they tend to develop them in the other eye over time as well. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Lily to verify that is what they think is going on. If that is the case, then there isn't any reason for concern. If Lily's eye is red or if she is squinting or rubbing her eye, please have your vet examine her right away. I hope that was helpful and answered your question. It is hard to say exactly what the issue may be with Draco's eye without performing an ocular exam on him and running a few tests on the eye first, but I can offering a possibility. Spots on the cornea (clear part of the eye) itself can indicate a corneal ulcer or breaks in the cornea. These can be painful and uncomfortable. You may notice tearing or frequent discharge from the eye. Your veterinarian can diagnose a corneal ulcer with an ocular exam and a few tests. It is treatable with medication. I am sorry to hear about Phantom! Cataracts can be from a variety of causes, and they aren't always one we can identify. Many cataracts are actual a result of genetics and not something that happened to the dog or a result of illness, thought it is important for your vet to examine your dog and get a good history to make sure there isn't an underlying issue. I would recommend having Phantom's vet examine the eye to ensure it is a true cataract and not nuclear sclerosis if you think he is still visual. I would also be concerned if the eye has increased weeping that he could have uveitis (inflammation in the anterior chamber of the eye) or glaucoma as a result of the cataract which can cause pain and increased tear production. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concerns. The eyes look to be cataracts, which there is not much you can do for cataracts (medically). Surgically, you can have these removed but this procedure typically costs $3000 per eye in my experience. It is possible that the cataracts could be due to diabetes but without blood work, it is difficult to say. Even if this was due to diabetes, there is no reversing the condition once developed. The skin could be a skin infection or allergy. I would recommend using the following products, which can all be found online to see if this helps the skin. I hope this helps! June is such a cutie! Unfortunately without seeing it, I cannot say what it is. If it is cataracts then it is possible that the congenital cataracts could get worse and could eventually lead to blindness. There isn't any good treatment to help prevent it from progressing. If it becomes mature and is causing blindness, you can have an ophthalmologist do surgery to repair it. If the recheck is still seeing the white speck, you could always request to have an ophthalmology consult done as well. The breeder may or may not be willing to do that. It could also be a cholesterol deposit which is benign and won't cause any issues. I hope this helps!

Hello I can't tell exactly what is going on with Jack but it could be a type of cataract forming in his lens causing that spot. If he isn't squinting, does not have any eye discharge, redness and/or cloudiness you can monitor that spot for now and contact you veterinarian about how soon they would want to examine his eye more closely with a specific light and lens.
