Why does my dog have white discharge around his eye? Is it serious?

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This looks like a serious infection of the skin due to the matting of the eye discharge under the eye. Honestly, he will probably need oral antibiotics to clear this up so I really recommend you take him to a vet for an exam. Especially if the discharge from the eye has increased. In the meantime while waiting for an appointment you can use this eye gel in the eye AND on that raw spot, 3 - 4 times per day. You must be extremely careful with what type of products you use around the eye and many human eye medications are not appropriate to use in animals. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Mikey! The discharge doesn't look yellow or green so I do not think it is infected...yet. If this is more discharge than he Mikey normally has it could be allergies or the start of a bacterial conjunctivitis or pink eye. Especially if he goes to dog parks or doggie day care. I would make an appointment with your Vet for an evaluation. If warranted they may prescribe an ocular antibiotic drop or ointment. I hope this helps and I wish Mikey a speedy recovery!

I recommend that you have them evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. The discharge you are seeing may also be due to dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and could also be an allergy. I would recommend having Tibo examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having a Schirmer Tear Test done to rule out dry eye as a cause. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor guy! if the discharge didn't resolve with an ocular antibiotic it likely isn't a bacterial conjunctivitis. I would recommend having your Vet test for dry eye and then treat for allergies. Since he is rubbing his chin he could have allergies to his environment. He may need an eye ointment with steroids in it and be put on a systemic antihistamine. Below is a link to one you can try. I would also recommend preventing your other dog from licking the eye as he could be contributing to an infection. The foul breath could be dental disease or from the type of food you feed.
