What's this matted discharge under my dog's eye? Is it serious?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor guy! if the discharge didn't resolve with an ocular antibiotic it likely isn't a bacterial conjunctivitis. I would recommend having your Vet test for dry eye and then treat for allergies. Since he is rubbing his chin he could have allergies to his environment. He may need an eye ointment with steroids in it and be put on a systemic antihistamine. Below is a link to one you can try. I would also recommend preventing your other dog from licking the eye as he could be contributing to an infection. The foul breath could be dental disease or from the type of food you feed. I recommend cleaning this daily with a hot warm cloth to remove the discharge. Then when you have the area clean apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the area below the eyes. That will help heal the skin and stop the discharge from sticking to the skin and fur. I would have Babygurl's eyes checked by your veterinarian. This looks like she has dry eyes, which is a decrease in normal tear production. With this condition the eye discharge is thick and sticky like this. There is medication for dry eyes which will increase the tear production. Dry eyes can be painful and she may irritate the corneas causing reduced vision without treatment, so please have her checked soon. At least in these pictures, his cornea appears affected. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It's not possible to know what's causing this without doing a full eye exam, but I'm suspicious of an eye infection, or conjunctivitis. I can't see the grey dots, but this is likely due to some degree of damage to the outside of the eye. Conjunctivitis can be caused by a few different infections, or dust and debris in the eye. This appears to be moderate to severe case, so I recommend taking Moxie to the vet sometime in the next 24 hours. They will be able to better inspect the eye and provide the most appropriate treatment. For now, you can flush the eye 3-4 times a day with saline (can get this at the supermarket or pharmacy in the eye care section) to help clean and soothe it. There is nothing you can do at home. He needs to be evaluated as soon as possible as this is likely serious and his eye health may be in jeopardy. Green discharge from the eyes usually means infection so she will likely need antibiotics to get this to clear up. In the meantime you can use this over the counter eye flush to help.
