My dog has a white bump on his penis. Vet says okay, but I'm worried.

Hello and thank you for your questions about Jonesy. It's difficult to know if this is normal or not without being able to examine him. Some dogs do have a protrusion above the urethral opening on their penis and it's often lighter colored than the rest of the tissue. This is normal. However, if you are noticing him licking more than normal, this often indicates discomfort. Young male dogs, especially if they are not neutered, often get infections in the prepuce and this can cause excessive licking and often an increase in discharge. Male dogs can also get bladder infections which can also cause increased licking. Since Jonesy cannot talk and tell you why this is happening, I recommend to have him examined this week. This is the best way to know what is happening and if treatment is needed. I hope this gets figured out quickly. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This is probably not serious. I recommend feeling it and writing down how big it is every month. I don’t expect it to change but if it does start to grow or becomes painful then please take him in for an exam. I would also point this out to your veterinarian at his yearly exam. Hello, sorry to hear about Chewy. Depending on how it feels that could be something benign such as a fluid filled cyst or an abscess (pocket of infection and pus), or it could be something more aggressive such as cancer. The only way to tell is by taking a sample of it and looking at the cells under the microscope. If it's a cyst or an abscess, your veterinarian will be able to tell most likely without needing to look at the cells. I would recommend having the lump evaluated by your veterinarian. In the interim you should monitor the lump daily to note any changes in size or appearance. Hope this helps and best of luck

There is nothing abnormal appearing in that photo. There can be mucous in the sheath if there is an infection so you may need to clean that but the white portion in that photo does not appear abnormal

It could be that Benjamin has a cyst in that area, which is why the vet says it's nothing to worry about. Cysts form when a sebaceous gland in the skin is blocked and there is a build up of oil. They are benign, but if it's getting bigger, then it needs to be drained sterilely. You can take Benjamin back into your vet to have it seen again since it's getting bigger, or you can take him into another vet for a second opinion.

You can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!
