My Golden Retriever's whisker is constantly twitching. Why?

Hello. Whiskers are thick, this is normal. Itching face and redness isn't normal. Itching face could be due to ear infection or mites, allergies, or if very sudden could be a bug bite or bee sting. Watch for facial swelling or hives and if present have him to a vet right away. If the itching persists then have his skin checked by a vet. Good luck!

Thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach about Bella. I would recommend that she is examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. She is having persistent neurologic signs and there may be others that you cannot detect but that can be determined by an examination from a doctor. These are all important findings to determine the origin of this problem. I know that you mention toxin is not possibly but we commonly see pets that have ingested a toxin that was unknown to the owner. It does not appear to be a wound, just an area of irritation and hair loss. This could be the start of a skin infection in this area that may have been caused by a bite from the other dog. I would recommend applying a antibiotic ointment such as Sentry Wound Ointment (can be found at PetCo) and apply twice daily for 5-7 days. If the area becomes bigger or new lesions develop, I would recommend having Penelope examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If he will allow, look in and around his mouth for any signs of infection, injury or foreign bodies. This may include redness, swelling, discharge, bruising or bleeding. See your veterinarian for an exam if anything suspicious is noted.

It could be caused by a bacterial infection, ringworm, demodex, allergic dermatitis, autoimmune disease, etc. Since it is bleeding, it would be a good idea to have your vet take a look at the lesions to determine the cause. Once diagnosed, your vet can prescribe medications to help treat the problem. They may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, or other medications depending on the cause.

Without seeing her perform this behavior myself it is very difficult to say what is going on. It sounds like it could be a problem with her mouth like maybe one side hurts and when she has the toy in her mouth that aggravates it. It could be a problem with one of the TMJ joints. A vet exam would be warranted I think. I would also suggest you videotape this behavior so your vet can see what you are talking about. I doubt it is a serious issue however, if you get an exam on Wifi then you will have peace of mind. I hope this helps. Best wishes!
