My dog wheezed briefly twice. Should I be concerned or wait?

Hello, the wheezing could indeed indicate allergies, rhinitis, upper respiratory tract infection or perhaps something associated with her lungs or trachea. If it is very mild and only heard when he is close to you, this may be a variation of his normal breathing. I would monitor for any concurrent sneezing, coughing, or nasal discharge. I recommend that you have Jayme evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. This sounds a lot scarier than it is and can usually be treated well with oral medications, though extreme cases may require surgery. Sometimes coughs and snorts can be underlying signs of chronic bronchitis or heart disease as well. Usually in more serious disease, we are seeing the signs associated with the animal not feeling well for days at a time, instead of just a single cough incident though. I would recommend trying to take a video the next time she makes the sound and seeing if there are any common triggers for it. That information would help your vet give you the best answer as to what is going on.

Poor guy. He may have a type of bronchitis or asthma. I would definitely recommend getting him seen by your vet and get some x-rays of his chest done to determine the underlying problem there. I would also try video taping one of his episodes to show your vet so that we can get clarity on what you are seeing at home, since most pets won't repeat the event while at the vet. Another possible thing this could be is a reverse sneeze. Look up reverse sneezing dogs on youtube to see if this is what Toby is doing. If he is having reverse sneezing episodes, then these are not of concern and are not life threatening. They are typically caused by mild allergies or irritation to the larynx. You can help Toby during these episodes by gently rubbing on his throat and offering him small amounts of water on your finger. If they become more frequent and start to impede on his quality of life, then you should visit your vet to rule out other undelrying causes that may require treatment. Since it has been 3 days with no sign of abatement, Nora should be physically examined by your veterinarian. After an exam chest x-rays and lab work may be indicated to diagnose the underlying cause.

If the cough is occurring every now and then and your dog seems comfortable, I would not worry about it. It will take some time, (3-4days ), for the inflammation to disappear completely. If at any point symptoms should get worse, then it' s worthy to take another look at him.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the wheezing noise is new then I would have Cherry examined. It could be a upper respiratory infection or kennel cough. If Cherry is overweight then that can affect the loudness of her breathing as well. If this has been going on for a while, Cherry could have an overlong soft palate or everted saccules that just vibrate when she is sleeping and snoring.
