My dog wheezes loudly, even waking up at night. Should I be worried?

Given his breed, this can also be brachycehalic syndrome though that typically presents in a different way. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Jackie doesn't have loud nasal noises or discharge when awake I think her snoring while sleeping is normal. It could be allergies or she could be overweight (obesity in dogs can cause snoring and/or breathing problems). If there are no symptoms while she is awake I don't think any treatment is needed. The symptoms she is experiencing such as trying to clear her throat, may actually be a cough. Coughing and wheezing can be indicative of an upper respiratory infection. There are a variety of causes for what you are describing, including an upper respiratory infection, tracheal irritation, asthma, allergies, or another underlying issue. As they are persistent and non-resolving, I would recommend Cooper be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to try to determine what may be going on, have any necessary testing done (xrays, etc) and start a treatment plan if needed. Hello, the wheezing could indeed indicate allergies, rhinitis, upper respiratory tract infection or perhaps something associated with her lungs or trachea. If it is very mild and only heard when he is close to you, this may be a variation of his normal breathing. I would monitor for any concurrent sneezing, coughing, or nasal discharge.
