Puppy has a wheezy cough after choking. When should I be concerned?

I wouldn't worry if it was just one-time, however I would monitor the puppies for any additional coughs or signs of respiratory issues (heavy breathing, vomiting, not wanting to eat or drink, turning pale/blue, etc) If the coughing happens again, or you are seeing other signs of illness, a vet visit right away is best.

Dogs that have something stuck in the larynx or the trachea will continue to cough, gag and have difficulty breathing. It sounds to me like you took care of the problem and I wouldn’t be concerned as long as Vito is acting normal.

He likely aspirated some food. If it's just one day of hacking, then it's OK to wait and see if it clears in the next day or two. However, we always worry about aspiration pneumonia, which can be more serious. If the hacking persists for more than two days and is not getting better, then it's best to take him to the vet. If your dog has always done this, then I would not be too worried about a condition causing him to gag when eating. However, if this gagging is recent (within the last year), then I would get him checked-out by a vet. I'm particularly concerned about laryngeal paralysis, which can happen in older dogs and cause them to aspirate their food and water. I hope that helps and Anubis gets better soon.

If she is coughing a little, I would not worry about Mila just yet. If a piece of rawhide had gotten caught in her trachea, she would be in distress, choking and drooling, and pawing at her mouth. If it was caught in her esophagus, she would be drooling and regurgitation shortly after eating it. Should she show any of those signs, I would take her into a vet right away. Given that she is coughing a little, it is likely the rawhide simply irritated her esophagus, and she should be ok :-)

Hello, at 5 months of age the most common reason for coughing/choking is kennel cough. I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam and medications. This can progress to a pneumonia quickly and in a small 2# dog this can be extremely serious. I am very worried about this as you stated he was weak and lost his appetite. I don't suggest that you continue to perform any "first aid" for choking on a dog this small as you can easily injury him. I assure you that it is very unlikely he has something stuck in his throat. This could be an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough , but could also be a sign of heart disease, especially if Chico is an older dog. Another very likely possibility is that Chico has a collapsed trachea. You will need to take Chico to your vet for an exam and x-rays (which will rule out collapsed trachea and lung edema caused by congestive heart failure). Your vet;s exam will also detect any problems with the heart, that may be causing the cough. Please cschedule an appointment with your vet soon.

My best guess is she has kennel cough. It is the most common reason for coughing in puppies. I can almost guarantee that there is nothing stuck in her throat and that it is not an allergy. Both are very unlikely. The vet should have checked her throat as you can usually make them cough with palpation of the trachea. She should be on antibiotics and cough medicine. I suggest you call the vet back and discuss kennel cough and treatment.
