My dog is wheezing sometimes. Should I be concerned or just watch?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the wheezing noise is new then I would have Cherry examined. It could be a upper respiratory infection or kennel cough. If Cherry is overweight then that can affect the loudness of her breathing as well. If this has been going on for a while, Cherry could have an overlong soft palate or everted saccules that just vibrate when she is sleeping and snoring. Abnormal breathing sounds can be a sign of many conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease, among many other possibilities. Given his breed, this can also be brachycehalic syndrome though that typically presents in a different way. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. There are a variety of causes for what you are describing, including an upper respiratory infection, tracheal irritation, asthma, allergies, or another underlying issue. As they are persistent and non-resolving, I would recommend Cooper be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to try to determine what may be going on, have any necessary testing done (xrays, etc) and start a treatment plan if needed. The symptoms she is experiencing such as trying to clear her throat, may actually be a cough. Coughing and wheezing can be indicative of an upper respiratory infection. She may need chest x-rays to confirm an upper respiratory infection and may be placed on antibiotics. I hope this helps and I wish you and Luna the best!

Hello, the wheezing could indeed indicate allergies, rhinitis, upper respiratory tract infection or perhaps something associated with her lungs or trachea. If it is very mild and only heard when he is close to you, this may be a variation of his normal breathing. I would monitor for any concurrent sneezing, coughing, or nasal discharge.
