My dog's vomiting and not eating for 24 hours. What should I do?

Unfortunately, those are very general signs of illness that can be a part of a lot of different issues. Parasites, illness, obstructions, infections, etc can all be potential causes behind vomiting and refusal to eat. If she's only vomited once or twice, you can try a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken to try and settle her stomach, however if she keeps vomiting, is refusing all food, is very lethargic, or seems painful or in distress, it is best to seek veterinary care ASAP.

Hi there. I am sorry to hear that Chloe is not feeling well. The lethargy, shaking or trembling, being withdrawn, and hanging her head down certainly can indicate that she is in pain or discomfort somewhere. Not eating or drinking can also by a sign of pain or that there is a problem with her intestinal tract or other systems in her body. All of these signs do not point to one specific problem, however, they do tell us that Chloe is definitely ill. A good physical exam and most likely some tests from Chloe's veterinarian will help sort out the problem for her and hopefully get her feeling better soon. Best of luck to Chloe!

Since last night was Halloween, think about if there's anything she could have eaten that she shouldn't have and take her to the vet ASAP if you realize your chocolate stash or your entire pan of bacon wrapped something or anothers from the potluck is missing. If you can't think of anything she ate, it's generally ok to wait 24 hours to see if she get back on her food naturally. Sometimes something goes wrong in the gut and we don't know why but it resolves quickly. If she's not back to normal in 24 hours, or has any vomiting or diarrhea in the mean time, she needs to go to her vet for evaluation and supportive care. If Shieyah is vomiting and not stopping I would recommend a veterinarian. They can provide a medication to stop the vomiting and make sure it is nothing to be concerned about, like pancreatitis or even a foreign body. If she vomited once. I would withhold food for about 6 hours and rec small multiple meals of boiled chicken and white rice or a prescription bland diet. If she gets worse after this then she needs to see a veterinarian. Poor girl. She may have an internal illness that is making her not want to eat. Since it has been more than 24 hrs I would encourage you to take her to your vet to get checked out. She may have an infection, organ malfunction, or a severe stomach upset from something she ate. She will likely need medications through your vet to help her get back on her feet. In the meantime you can try offering her small amounts of Pedialyte non-flavored (diluted 50:50 with water) and small amounts of a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. Poor Cally! The vomiting could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn't have, bacterial over growth, parasites (worms and giardia) or even something more severe like organ dysfunction or intestinal blockage. Pets who vomit beyond 24 hours need to be examined and I recommend to have Cally examined by the veterinarian today. Try to remember to take in a stool sample. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial. Other diagnostics may be recommended as well. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. No, this will not help Cinnamon stop vomiting. Vomiting in dogs can be caused by a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or pancreatitis. A vet can give her a shot that will help stop the vomiting, and can diagnose what is causing her to vomit. If Cinnamon has been vomiting for less than 24 hours and not been vomiting multiple times per hour, then you can try a home remedy to see if that helps with the vomiting before taking her into the vet; otherwise, I would take her into the vet immediately should she be vomiting for more than 24 hours, and/or multiple times per hour. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
