My dog is vomiting and won't eat. When should I call the vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If it is more than a couple of hours after taking her medication before she vomited, Bailey probably got most of her dose. However if she continues to vomit, or isn't eating at all after 48 hours she may need some fluid therapy. I would recommend contacting her vet tomorrow if she still isn't eating. If she vomits anymore tonight or seems to feel worse then she may need to go to an emergency clinic tonight.

I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. That does make things a bit concerning, but I can give you a home remedy for Nessa to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

It is concerning that Fablo has been vomiting and not pooping. It makes me wonder if he has diarrhea or did have diarrhea. If he continues to vomit, becomes lethargic, doesn't want to eat or has blood in the stool or vomit he needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Since last night was Halloween, think about if there's anything she could have eaten that she shouldn't have and take her to the vet ASAP if you realize your chocolate stash or your entire pan of bacon wrapped something or anothers from the potluck is missing. If you can't think of anything she ate, it's generally ok to wait 24 hours to see if she get back on her food naturally. Sometimes something goes wrong in the gut and we don't know why but it resolves quickly. If she's not back to normal in 24 hours, or has any vomiting or diarrhea in the mean time, she needs to go to her vet for evaluation and supportive care. Unfortunately, those are very general signs of illness that can be a part of a lot of different issues. Parasites, illness, obstructions, infections, etc can all be potential causes behind vomiting and refusal to eat. If she's only vomited once or twice, you can try a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken to try and settle her stomach, however if she keeps vomiting, is refusing all food, is very lethargic, or seems painful or in distress, it is best to seek veterinary care ASAP.

I hate to hear that Pantufla is not feeling well! Just like humans, there are many many causes of vomiting and some of the causes can be very serious. Any pet vomiting beyond 24 hours should be examined by the veterinarian. Any pet who is vomiting more than twice in a day or not holding down water also needs to be examined by the veterinarian. I am concerned that the shaking you are seeing indicates abdominal pain which is very worrisome for an intestinal blockage or pancreatitis. I recommend to have Pantufla examined today.
