My dog threw up after hernia surgery. Is it her pain medication?

Hi there. It's certainly possible for dogs to have a mild upset stomach for 12-24 hours after an anesthetic episode, but it would be unusual to see this three days later - especially with such severe symptoms. I would recommend having her rechecked by your veterinarian tomorrow morning, or going to the ER tonight if she seems overly distressed or lethargic. It's possible that she could have a stomach ulcer as a result of the Rimadyl (uncommon, but can happen occasionally even with appropriate dosing), or may have some other problem that may or may not be related to her surgery. It sounds like she needs an exam and likely some lab work +/- x-rays to help determine what's going on and see what kind of treatment is needed.

It can be normal to vomit once or twice in the 24 hours following anesthesia but I wouldn't expect Sadie to be experiencing side effects from anesthesia at this point. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her if the vomiting and decreased appetite continue: it may or may not be related to her recent surgery. If she is on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain medication like carprofen or meloxicam it would be best to discontinue the medication since these can sometimes cause stomach upset - your vet can prescribe a different pain medication if necessary.

Oh no, poor pup! It sounds like her stomach is still sensitive from the GDV and resulting surgery, and it could be causing her vomiting. I would give your vet a call today to let them know you are seeing this vomiting once a day, as she may still need more antacids. The vet can prescribe more medication if they feel she needs it.

Poor Kobe! First a fight, and now vomiting, its been a rough week for him! I'm wondering if he may be sensitive to either the antibiotic or pain relief medicine that he's been on since the surgery? Some dogs can have vomiting or diarrhea due to these medicines. It may be worth calling his vet to check, as they might choose to switch him on to a different medicine instead. I hope Kobe feels better soon!

If he recently had intestinal surgery and is experiencing nausea than you should call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to recheck him to make sure it is not related to the surgery. There really isn't a good over the counter medication for nausea but your vet could prescribe an anti-vomiting medication and antacid. You could add a probiotic to his diet, like Proviable or Fortiflora and see if that helps. Also, feeding him a gastrointestinal diet may help, too.

Vomiting that many times in a short period of time is a bit concerning. The orange-y color is bile and that is normal gastric fluid if they are vomiting with the stomach empty. I do think you should get him to a vet at the first possibility. If you have a human antacid medication you can typically use them in dogs. I can't tell you any dosing without knowing what you have. If xrays and general labwork have been performed already, I would start looking for other possibilities causing this with more advanced diagnostics such as an abdominal ultrasound and GI panel to begin with. Another disease they could investigate is Addison's disease. This would expand the diagnostics to the point of being able to more extensively look into what may be causing this in him.
