Why is my dog still throwing up after surgery, despite normal tests?

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | neutered | 120 lbs

So Roc is my cousin's dog. Last week he went in to have a toenail fixed and had to go under anesthesia. When they took him home the vet gave them pain meds to give him. On the way home he was throwing up. Since then he has been throwing up Non-Stop. He's been back to the vet multiple times and has had blood work done and x-rays and everything is normal. They've also tried giving him the anti-nausea as well as taking him off the pain meds and nothing helps. My cousin is at a loss and no more

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If xrays and general labwork have been performed already, I would start looking for other possibilities causing this with more advanced diagnostics such as an abdominal ultrasound and GI panel to begin with. Another disease they could investigate is Addison's disease. This would expand the diagnostics to the point of being able to more extensively look into what may be causing this in him. Treatment if any would depend on findings. Good luck!

You're right to take Petey into the vet today!
Based on what you're saying, I would be concerned about an endocrine disorder called Addison's disease. This is a disease of the adrenal glands that makes it very difficult for the pet to cope with any amount of stress. It can cause intermittent vomiting at first, but if left untreated, can lead to dangerously low blood pressure that often requires a few days of IV fluid therapy to stabilize.

Other problems that can cause chronic vomiting in dogs are diseases of the liver and kidneys, stomach ulcers, and sometimes even objects that they've eaten that are stuck in the intestines.

I would recommend starting with a full panel of bloodwork and x-rays at your appointment today for Petey to check his overall health and organ function, then making the next decisions based on those results. I would have your Vet take belly X-rays, deworm him and then I would change his food to a new protein source or a prescription food. If he doesn't have something stuck or worms then it is possible he has a food allergy. Another thought it to test for Addison's disease, which is decreased steroid production from the adrenal glands. It can cause weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite. I hope this helps!

Why is my dog still vomiting water and sick after normal blood tests?

It sounds like their treatment didn’t resolve the symptoms. Things like pancreatitis or GI obstruction won’t show up on routine blood work, so I would recommend calling the vet today for what needs to happens next. If an obstruction is one of the vet’s concerns, they may recommend x-rays or ultrasound. If pancreatitis is a concern, then usually they need to go on IV fluids for a day or two.

My dog is vomiting after surgery. What's the best test for a blockage?

I recommend doing a GI contrast series of X-rays first. That will show if there is a blockage from her eating something that is stuck in the intestines. The ultrasound for this is not as helpful in my opinion and shouldn’t be necessary unless there is no blockage and they want to check her abdomen and other organs. Why is my dog still vomiting after feeding tube, despite clear tests?

Poor girl! If she has already had her biopsy results returned and they were clear then I would worry about cancer somewhere. Although unlikely since she is so young it is definitely possible. You could also have your vet send off a GI panel to check her pancreatic enzymes, cobalamin, and folate levels. If the biopsy results have not come back yet, I would wait for those before trying anything new. It could show several different things including inflammatory bowel disease, change in the musculature, and much more that will help your vet treat her. Biopsies are the best diagnosis for dogs that won't eat and all other tests are normal. I hope this helps and she starts to eat and feel better really soon!

Why is my dog still vomiting and not eating after clear X-rays?

Acute pancreatitis and gastrointestinal inflammation/infections are still possible as well as foreign body ingestion with material not visible on X rays (ultrasound in these cases might be more sensitive). Given the lack of improvement, I would suggest to have her checked again and have a test for pancreatitis (it is a blood test called cPLI) performed. If not eating and probably in a sort of abdominal discomfort, nutritional support and pain relief meds are needed.

I would talk to your vet about submitting a GI panel or performing biopsies. Even with normal ultrasounds, IBD or lymphoma may not be able to be diagnosed. Empirical deworming may be indicated. Steroid trials may help. Has the thyroid level been checked? There is so much more information we need to be able to help you in this complicated case. Why does my dog keep throwing up hours after eating for weeks?

Hi, sorry to hear your dog is having this problem. I would recommend an ultrasound to make sure he does not have Inflammatory bowel disorder or a foreign body that does not show up on x ray. Some foreign objects can migrate throughout the GI tract so they can sometimes cause problems and sometimes be fine. An infection would not cause this problem. The anti vomiting injection only lasts 24 hours so if he did not vomit on that, you can try oral tablet of it. But if he did vomit through the injection, it is more likely he has a foreign body. If your vet cannot do an abdominal ultrasound, I would go to a specialist who has an ultrasound and is good at them to find out what is wrong Good luck, I hope this helps!
