Why is my dog vomiting and not eating after surgery and Rimadyl?

Pet's info: Dog | English Mastiff | Female | unspayed | 160 lbs

Can preop analgesic cause upper gi problems? Dog was also administered rimadyl post op. Vomiting, melena and complete loss of appetite presented three days later.

Hi there. It's certainly possible for dogs to have a mild upset stomach for 12-24 hours after an anesthetic episode, but it would be unusual to see this three days later - especially with such severe symptoms. I would recommend having her rechecked by your veterinarian tomorrow morning, or going to the ER tonight if she seems overly distressed or lethargic.

It's possible that she could have a stomach ulcer as a result of the Rimadyl (uncommon, but can happen occasionally even with appropriate dosing), or may have some other problem that may or may not be related to her surgery. It sounds like she needs an exam and likely some lab work +/- x-rays to help determine what's going on and see what kind of treatment is needed.

If the anesthesia was given within the last 24 hours, it can cause some vomiting and digestive upset as a side effect, however this usually resolves within 24 hours. Some pain medications and antibiotics given after surgery may also cause minor digestive upset, however if Sally is continuing to vomit, or is very tender or painful on her abdomen, this is very concerning and should be brought to the attention of your vet. They may recommend a recheck of the area, or additional medications to help protect the stomach while she heals.

Hello, sorry to hear about Sally's complications. Its hard to tell if this is a side effect of the anesthesia or the surgery itself or any of the medications she has received. Perhaps your veterinarian will investigate a little further as to the cause of her sudden onset of illness and may consider hospitalization for Sally. If sally had any pre-existing condition that could have been exacerbated with the anesthetic procedure, these should also be re-evaluated to ensure there has not been any progression of those. I can understand your concern. It is unlikely that she will have a serious complication from getting this dosage early due to her weight of 17lbs. I would recommend monitoring her for vomiting, bloody stool or refusal to eat for more 12 hrs. I assume you gave her the Rimadyl with a full meal as instructed. If you didn’t and she won’t take a meal now, then that is cause for concern and she should see an ER vet right away. But if she ate a full meal and is just sleepy it’s ok to wait it out. I would also give her a half of slice of bread, if she’ll take it and if anything else changes over the next 12-24 hrs Paige should be seen by a vet to make sure she is ok. Giving back to back NSAIDS do have the tendency to cause an upset stomach and in severe cases they can cause stomach ulcers, but typically this happens after long term usage of the drug or any drug interactions. It can be normal to vomit once or twice in the 24 hours following anesthesia but I wouldn't expect Sadie to be experiencing side effects from anesthesia at this point. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her if the vomiting and decreased appetite continue: it may or may not be related to her recent surgery. If she is on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain medication like carprofen or meloxicam it would be best to discontinue the medication since these can sometimes cause stomach upset - your vet can prescribe a different pain medication if necessary.

My dog is vomiting and not eating after dental surgery. ER needed?

Poor girl. It is not normal for a pet to have continuous vomiting and lack of appetite post dental extractions. If she was sent home with an NSAID to take that helps with pain and inflammation, then that could be the underlying cause of her symptoms. This would be considered an adverse reaction to the medication. If she seems like she can't control her vomiting and is very unstable, then yes an ER visit may be best for her. At the very least she needs to be seen within the next 12 hrs if possible, to get her treatment to stop the vomiting and help settle her stomach. My dog is throwing up white foam after taking Rimadyl. What's wrong?

This could be an adverse reaction to Rimadyl, it can upset the stomach and even cause stomach ulcer sometimes. I strongly recommend taking Trapper back to the vet to get medications that will counter the effect of rimadyl and stop the vomiting.

Why is my dog still vomiting and not eating after clear X-rays?

Acute pancreatitis and gastrointestinal inflammation/infections are still possible as well as foreign body ingestion with material not visible on X rays (ultrasound in these cases might be more sensitive). Given the lack of improvement, I would suggest to have her checked again and have a test for pancreatitis (it is a blood test called cPLI) performed. If not eating and probably in a sort of abdominal discomfort, nutritional support and pain relief meds are needed.

Dog vomited Rimadyl. Can I give Gabapentin with sensitive stomach?

I would give her next dose of gabapentin with food at 5pm. I would not recommend giving any more Rimadyl until you can touch base with your vet tomorrow, because you're right - the vomiting could be from the Rimadyl. Your vet may be able to suggest a different medication to try if they think the Rimadyl didn't sit well with her. The vet may also determine if an anti-nausea medication might be appropriate to help minimize the risk of vomiting while on her meds. Hope this helps! All the best to Chili.

My dog vomited and is sleepy after dental surgery. Should I worry?

I wouldn't be too concerned at this point if the dental was only just done today. Your dog underwent a pretty significant procedure and may not be the same for a couple of days. Give the pain medication as directed by your veterinarian unless your dog vomits again. If this is the case, call your vet about switching to something else. Post-anesthetic nausea is not uncommon so you might consider giving some pepsid or prilosec if you have any around the house. Hope this helps.
