My dog is vomiting orange bile and his hernia is hard. Is it serious?

If your pet has vomited this much in the past 45 minutes I would be very suspicious of a foreign body or a very intense dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have). I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. However there is a big possibility that this could have been a toxicity and if any more symptoms start to arise (such as ataxia (staggering) or shaking, crying out) then I highly recommend you seek a personal veterinarian for a physical examination and further diagnostics. - Dr. H

Honestly we rarely have to put these dogs on a special diet but if I had to pick a diet I would say high fiber which may help with GI motility. A prescription diet from your vet like Hill's w/d would be best. I would use the canned version. I am a bit worried that the diagnosis is not correct. There are many other reasons why a dog could be vomiting bile (parasites, partial GI obstruction, GI motility disorder, cancer, endocrine disorder, food intolerance/allergy, etc). Did he have any blood testing done? X-rays? I think you have already done what should be tried for simple bilious vomiting syndrome. Since he hans't improved and is actually worse, I strongly recommend you consult with your vet about more testing. I am also concerned as this is a diagnosis usually seen in older dogs; Earl is young to have this issue. In the meantime you can try giving him some over the counter antacid (famotidine) 10mg once a day but only give this until you can get him back to your vet. Some pain medications can cause stomach upset. If Olive continues to vomit, I would recommend stopping the pain medication and contacting your veterinarian. Other potential causes for vomiting include eating something irritating to the intestinal tract, infections or metabolic problems such as kidney or liver disease.

This looks like it could be vomit with bile present or it could be urine as well. I wouldn’t be particularly concerned about the presence of bile in vomit - it doesn’t necessarily signify anything different. If the vomiting continues I would recommend seeing your vet.

You should keep a close eye on him to ensure he doesn’t vomit again. If Bear continues to vomit, develops diarrhea or is not acting quite like himself, he should be seen by his vet as he may require medication and supportive care. Poor guy. It sounds like Indiana has a severe stomach upset. Yellow vomit is bile, which indicates he has an empty stomach and can't vomit anything else up. It also sounds like he is lethargic, which means that it is best to get him to your vet for treatment. Hopefully he just ate something that upset his stomach, because many underlying illnesses can cause GI (gastrointestinal) symptoms like these. The vet should be able to do a good physical exam and get his vitals to determine if there is likely something else underlying going on here or not.
