My dog is nauseous every morning after surgery. Any OTC remedies?

What is the best 'over the counter medication' for a dog having nausea in the early hours? He wakes me around 4-5AM salivating and wanting to vomit. He eats every day at 8 but has recently had surgery for an intestinal blockage, i.e. a ball. He also had just lost his best friend.

If he recently had intestinal surgery and is experiencing nausea than you should call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to recheck him to make sure it is not related to the surgery. There really isn't a good over the counter medication for nausea but your vet could prescribe an anti-vomiting medication and antacid. You could add a probiotic to his diet, like Proviable or Fortiflora and see if that helps. Also, feeding him a gastrointestinal diet may help, too.

I am sorry that Fireball was vomiting. It depends on how he is doing now. Anesthesia can slow down a dogs intestinal tract and they can get nauseous from it. It is not concerning if a dog vomits once or twice after anesthesia. It may have been a lot with the anesthesia and medication. I would recommend monitoring him right now. Monitor the incision and make sure it isn't oozing, swelling too much or extremely painful. Monitor him and his vomiting. If he continues to vomit or there is blood then I recommend a vet. Also, if he becomes lethargic I recommend a vet.

I would feed him a small meal tomorrow morning and if he holds everything down then give the medication.

Oh no, poor pup! It sounds like her stomach is still sensitive from the GDV and resulting surgery, and it could be causing her vomiting. I would give your vet a call today to let them know you are seeing this vomiting once a day, as she may still need more antacids. The vet can prescribe more medication if they feel she needs it.

Why is my dog vomiting and not eating after surgery and Rimadyl?

Hi there. It's certainly possible for dogs to have a mild upset stomach for 12-24 hours after an anesthetic episode, but it would be unusual to see this three days later - especially with such severe symptoms. I would recommend having her rechecked by your veterinarian tomorrow morning, or going to the ER tonight if she seems overly distressed or lethargic. It's possible that she could have a stomach ulcer as a result of the Rimadyl (uncommon, but can happen occasionally even with appropriate dosing), or may have some other problem that may or may not be related to her surgery. It sounds like she needs an exam and likely some lab work +/- x-rays to help determine what's going on and see what kind of treatment is needed.

My puppy is vomiting after car ride. Any OTC meds for his stomach?

Poor Huck! It could be he's vomiting for being car sick but it could also be he has a stomach illness. Unfortunately there are no OTC medications you can give him to settle his stomach, but I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. No, I don't think any vomiting is normal. With all the issues he really should be back at the vet so they can check him. He really should be hospitalized until he is eating normally and holding it down with no vomiting for a few days. If they find no issues he may just need to be on a daily anti-vomiting medication like Cerenia or an antacid like Pepcid.

My dog is nauseous and has a fever after vaccine. What can I do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Sooky. There are some medications that may be administered to your dog to stop nausea. However these medications require a prescription or injection. Maropitant and ondansetron are the most common, but other medications do exist. Otherwise, you may give him a day or so with a bland diet to rest his GI tract. This may include plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken. If he does have nausea however, he may not want to eat. Offer small amounts at first. The high temperature if associated with his vaccines should decrease on its own within 1-2 days. Monitor for worsening signs, and if you note any then contact your veterinarian immediately.
