My dog vomits after Atopica. How should I time Zitac for relief?

Atopica works most effectively when given on an empty stomach. That said, I have recommended to some patients to initially give it with food until some of the GI upset has resolved, knowing that the medication will not be as effective. Once the GI signs resolve, we then give it on an empty stomach. You should speak with your vet before trying this approach. I hope Lily is able to tolerate her Atopica and feel better soon!

This medication does not usually cause stomach bleeding but can cause vomiting. I would definitely let your vet now about the brown coloration, and if it happens again you can save the vomit and bring it to your vet for them to look at. Ketoconazole inhibits an enzyme which is involved in the metabolism of atopica. Ideally the drugs should not be given at the same time, unless under strict supervision of your veterinarian. You should not give any medications and especially human medications without a direct prescription from the vet treating Kitsu. I strongly recommend you contact the vets office and advise them of the new symtpoms, although some vomiting after antibiotics can be quite common t may also indicate she has not fully recovered. A probiotic supplement can eb helpful also to reabalnce the gut following oral antibiotics.

Hello. Atopica does not typically have a side effect of lethargy. Overdoses or adverse reactions can result in lethargy, so if she continues to be letthargic I would have her checked. Your vet may need to check her white blood cell levels or her liver values. I hope she feels better soon!

If he has pustules then he may need to be on an antibiotic again to treat an infection. Atopica can cause side effects in some dogs and if you dog is experiencing negative side effects then you could talk to your vet about switching to a new allergy medication called Apoquel. I have used it on may dogs and it seems to work very well with minimal side effects.

Poor pup! Nausea is less common with Nexgard than with some of the other oral flea meds available (such as Comfortis or Trifexis), but can still happen in some dogs. Normally, giving the pill with a meal helps to prevent this, but it doesn't sound like it's helped much for your dog. It normally doesn't matter what type of food you give it with, because the purpose of giving with a meal is to slow absorption of the medication so that it's more gradual - it's the presence of food in the stomach that helps, rather than any specific ingredients. So if this hasn't helped with your pup, you may want to try a different medication next month - the vomiting isn't dangerous and is not a sign of toxicity problems or any other serious issues, but I know it's no fun for either of you to have him vomit every month! He might do better with Bravecto, or a topical flea/tick med such as K9 Advantix.
