My dog is on Atopica and vomiting dark brown. Is it stomach bleeding?

Atopica works most effectively when given on an empty stomach. That said, I have recommended to some patients to initially give it with food until some of the GI upset has resolved, knowing that the medication will not be as effective. Once the GI signs resolve, we then give it on an empty stomach. You should speak with your vet before trying this approach. I hope Lily is able to tolerate her Atopica and feel better soon!

If he has pustules then he may need to be on an antibiotic again to treat an infection. Atopica can cause side effects in some dogs and if you dog is experiencing negative side effects then you could talk to your vet about switching to a new allergy medication called Apoquel. I have used it on may dogs and it seems to work very well with minimal side effects.

Poor Bear! This could indicate bleeding within his G.I. tract. That could be caused by also's, toxins, some cancers as well as infections. Because bleeding in the G.I. tract can cause severe anemia and even death I recommend Bear be examined by his veterinarian or emergency veterinarian tonight. Do not offer him any food or water or any human medications until he is examined by his veterinarian. You should monitor his gums for paleness as well as his abdomen for any pain or distention.

The half-life of Zitac in dogs is a little over and hour, so giving the Zitac between 30 and 60 minutes prior to the Atopica may help reduce the nausea and vomiting. Anecdotally, giving the Atopica with a small amount of food or freezing the pill for 30-60 minutes before giving it, have been reported to reduce the nausea side effects. You may also want to speak to your veterinarian about some of the newer H-2 blockers such as ranitidine or famotidine which may be more effective at preventing nausea.

They may recommend bloodwork and xrays to determine what is causing his symptoms. That is extremely concerning. Coffee ground colored vomit or stool could indicate a bleed in the GI tract or stomach. If Lucy has been vomiting like this for several days, it is best to seek out care from your vet or an emergency clinic right away.

Hello. Atopica does not typically have a side effect of lethargy. Overdoses or adverse reactions can result in lethargy, so if she continues to be letthargic I would have her checked. Your vet may need to check her white blood cell levels or her liver values. I hope she feels better soon!
