Why is my dog lethargic after starting Atopica? Is it normal?

Lethargy is one of the side effects that can occur with Atopica for cats, about 13.6% of cats develop lethargy while on Atopica. While this in itself is not a problem, I would observe Thunder for other side effects such as vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea , decreased appetite,which are the most common side effects. If any of those occur in addition to the lethargy or if the lethargy gets worse, take Thunder back to the vet for a recheck and reassessment. There may be an infection (as his immune system is deliberately suppressed to combat the hepatitis), or your vet may want to change the medication.

Great question! Unfortunately, I don't have a great answer. If your dog is eating and drinking normally and the issues that necessitated her hospitalization have resolved, I would be far less concerned. Until she has completed the courses of medication, it is ultimately impossible to determine if her lethargy is secondary to medication or due to illness. Consider calling your vet to discuss if any of the medications can be discontinued or if any doses can be reduced to limit potential lethargy. I hope that all goes well!

Hi, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Poor Myla, it sounds like she is having a bad time. The hairloss can occur from both ringworm and Demodex. Lethargy and loss of appetite could be a possible side effect of nexgard or can also be side effects of any antibiotic and antifungal medications she may be on. As long as she is relatively alert and active, then I would contact her regular vet in the morning to discuss your concerns. If she is severely lethargic, hasn't eaten at all in more than 12 hours or showing other signs of illness then I recommend taking her to an emergency vet tonight to have her checked out. Gastrointestinal upset and a decrease in appetite can be a side effect of Apoquel but it is not very common. Often the symptoms will improve after a few days. As long as Remy is not vomiting I’d continue the medication and contact your vet to let them know once they’re open.

Atopica works most effectively when given on an empty stomach. That said, I have recommended to some patients to initially give it with food until some of the GI upset has resolved, knowing that the medication will not be as effective. Once the GI signs resolve, we then give it on an empty stomach. You should speak with your vet before trying this approach. I hope Lily is able to tolerate her Atopica and feel better soon!

Lethargy is a very general sign of illness in dogs, and can be caused by systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. Lethargy isn't a side effect of Frontline, so I'm suspecting that it may be to to a medical illness. As long as Scout is eating and drinking normally as well as going to the bathroom normally, I would keep an eye on her for now. Should she still be lethargic in 48 hours, then I would be concerned and take her into the vet for an exam. If she stops eating and drinking, and develops other signs such as vomiting or diarrhea, then I would take her into a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Typically allergy pills will make your pet a little lethargic, that is a normal side effect. And if he just got 1 pill there shouldn’t be any toxicity concerns.
