Ketoconazole dosage for a 13lb dog with a Malassezia yeast infection?
Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry that Isabelle has this issue. Ketoconazole can be very hard on the liver and is only used in severe yeast infections. I would not give this medication unless a vet has specifically said that this medication is required. In general, a mild infection is treated with 5mg/kg (30mg for a 13lb dog), orally, one a day for 2 weeks, where a severe infection can be treated for 4-6 weeks. Often you will treat 1 week past clinical resolution. However, as mentioned, this medication can be very hard on the organs, especially the liver, and should not be given unless monitored by a veterinarian. I would suggest calling your vet to ask about dose amount and duration, as they may be able to tell you over the phone without another consult if you call and ask. Best of luck with Isabelle!
