My dog vomited red with bones. Is it safe to wait for the vet?

Hello. Anemia in a dog this young is usually due to parasites, but I cannot imagine that multiple stool checks were not done to rule this out. Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia is a strong possibility especially since your vet did treat with steroids. This can be a tricky disease so if your veterinarian is just not getting ahead of the problem you might want to ask for a referral to an internal medicine specialist. If you are within driving distance of your states veterinary college, this would be an excellent place to have Yoshiko evaluated. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can definitely see that Koda's vomit is reddish in color and has some red flecks in it. It is possible that the vomit has blood in it, though I would not expect it to have flecks in it. It is possible that Koda ate something that was red/pink in color that made his vomit this color. However, even the possibility of blood in vomit is cause for concern as this can be caused by stomach ulcers, foreign bodies, or certain toxins. I recommend keeping a very close eye on Koda, and having her examined immediately if this happens again or your believe you are seeing something that looks like frank blood or dark coffee grounds in her vomit. She should also be seen immediately if you think there is a chance that she may have eaten something she shouldn't have or has gotten into human medications. Until she can be seen by a vet tomorrow, I recommend not giving her any food and only offering small amounts of water. There are emergency clinics in most cities that are open 24 hours. It could be due to dietary indiscretion or even more concerning due to a gastrointestinal obstruction. The fact that Bailey ate dinner and did not vomit makes me think that it is less likely for this to be an obstruction though if the vomiting resumes or he stops eating, he should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Poor guy. As long as Oscar is relatively stable (normal vitals- no fever, breathing normal, nice pink gums, mentation normal), then you can wait the few hours for the vet to open up. He mostly sounds like he is having a severe GI upset right now. GI upset can be caused by something he ate, or can be an early indicator of another disease process altogether. The vet will run the necessary tests to determine what is the most likely cause and get him started on much needed medications as soon as possible.

It sounds like Jax may be suffering from either gastritis or even pancreatitis from goat and ham bones/ meat. Since this has been going on for over 24 hours I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. They may recommend an x-ray to look for an obstruction from the bones as well as blood work to see if he has pancreatitis. He will likely need anti nausea medications to help him improve. As long as your dog is not lethargic, retching and /or having diarrhea you can probably wait a few days in case you cannot take your dog to a vet tomorrow. However if any of those signs show then this is an emergency and your dog needs to be seen by a vet right away as there may be an intestinal obstruction caused by more stones. She will likely have more stones in her stomach, as dogs make it a habit to eat stones. These probably can be removed by making her regurgitate them with a medicine called apomorphine, or removed endoscopically , if they are still in the stomach, or via surgery.
