My dog ate chicken bones, now vomiting. When should I see a vet?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should monitor your dog at home for signs of vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tremors, abdominal pain, lethargy. If you notice any of these symptoms you should take your dog to your local vets as an emergency. Typically, the symptoms of food intoxication commence within 2-6 hrs after ingestion. Inducing vomiting in dogs that ate bones is never recommended as it pose a risk of esophageal tear from the sharp bones. Salmonellosis is a potential risk after eating decomposing food, however, Salmonella infection is not common in dogs in general. Typically, the symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and fever.

I'm sorry to hear that Rocket got into some chicken bones - sounds like he will need the trash can locked away from him from now on. While most chicken bones can be digested by the stomach acid, some larger pieces may start migrating through the intestines before the stomach has had a chance to fully break them down. This makes sense with how you are already seeing pieces in his stool. Since he is vomiting and having diarrhea, he is likely experiencing some significant gastroenteritis, or inflammation/irritation of the GI tract. This is most often self-limiting, and should resolve on its own with a few days of a bland diet. I recommend feeding Rocket a diet of boiled rice and boiled chicken (no bones!) in a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part meat, for the next 2-3 days. If Rocket continues to vomit, or the diarrhea becomes bloody, I recommend having him seen a by veterinarian. A big concern would be that one of the bones has become lodged in his intestines, causing a blockage. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Rocket!

Keep an eye on Dobby. As long as he's keeping his food down, keep feeding him and offering him plenty of water. Give him half a slice of whole wheat bread with each meal. This may form a ball of ingesta around the bones, and cushion them as they pass through the GI tract. If he continues vomiting, there is blood in his vomit or feces, he becomes lethargic, and/or he stops eating, he needs to see a vet immediately. In that case, find an ER vet or a vet on call. I would not recommend making Cooper vomit. IF he continues to vomit I would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible for a possible obstruction. I would monitor him closely for eating, drinking and defecation. If he is not defecation or having diarrhea I would recommend taking him to a vet. These large bones can cause a blockage or severe gastric upset. Hope that helps

If you have an emergency vet available in your area, I would strongly recommend getting him seen right away. Keep him warm, keep him hydrated by offering low sodium chicken broth, ice cubes to lick and get him seen the second you can. And make sure to submit the vet bill to whoever fed him bones and people food. It may not do any good, but it may make them more aware of the consequences of feeding pets something they shouldn't have.

Poor girl. I think both are a possibility here since they produce almost the exact same symptoms. Although you generally see more lethargy, smaller stool sizes and vomiting of both water and food in pets with an obstruction. At any rate Isabella should definitely be seen by your vet for testing (bloodwork + radiographs) and treatment based on what the final diagnosis is. I hope your fur baby is able to feel better soon! Your dog still may vomit the bone or some of the bone fragments and she will probably have an upset stomach for a day or so. She will probably also develop diarrhea or soft stools because of ingesting the bones. Keep a close eye on her and if the vomiting lasts more than 24 hours or she starts having bloody stools, you will need to take her to the veterinarian.
