My dog threw up rocks but seems fine. When should I see a vet?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lou. You will need to monitor him closely. Hopefully he vomited all of the rocks he ingested. If not, there is the potential for one to become lodged in his intestines. This would make him very ill. Signs of this include vomiting, lethargy and a decreased appetite. If this occurs, you will need to find a veterinarian for him. In the meantime, offer him some water . Wait several hours as he just vomited and then you can offer a small amount of his food. Hello. Stones can either pass through the system without too much of an issue, or they can cause a huge problem and require surgery to take out. Unfortunately you are at a waiting game. If Paddy is eating/drinking, and normal in energy, then just keep watching him and don't worry. If he is fine after a few days you are OK. If Paddy starts vomiting, stops eating, is weak, sore when you touch his abdomen, or is having trouble pooping or not passing any feces, they you need to get him to a vet ASAP for some x-rays and possible surgery. Hi, sorry to hear Rosco is having a problem. it sounds like he may have a foreign object stuck in his GI tract. Rock can be stuck in the stomach or intestines, which is a bit more serious. They can also move around so sometimes he will feel fine, and other will be sick depending on the migration of the object. I suggest bringing him to the vet to have an x ray of his abdomen taken. They will be able to tell if there are rocks stuck in there or some other object. The longer you wait, the more damage the rocks will do to his GI tract. I suggest going as soon as you can. it is not an emergency right now, but I would make an appointment in the next two days. Good luck, i hope this helps!

You can monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. Attempts to vomit or straining to defecate are additional symptoms that you should watch out for. Beyond that, there is not much you can do at home. If Piper develops any of the above symptoms, she will need to be examined by your veterinarian.

If the vomiting, lack of normal thirst/appetite continue, then I would advise having your vet evaluate him. Rock ingestion can be a major problem in dogs. They can become stuck in the stomach or intestines causing a foreign body obstruction. Your vet can take a history, examine him, and then discuss a treatment plan as warranted. Good luck

It will likely pass. The symptoms of an issue to look out for including vomiting/especially within an hour of eating, straining to defecate, not popping. If you are willing to sift through each bowel movement until you find the small stone, that will provide additional peace of mind. Otherwise screening abdominal x-rays at your vet can determine whether the stone is stuck somewhere and are recommended especially if vomiting/in appearance or straining to defecate are noted. Unfortunately, rocks of certain sized can get stuck in the GI tract and cause an obstruction so just watch him closely. An obstruction will usually cause vomiting and a lack of appetite. I actually had to surgically remove a rock from my own personal dog. Silly dogs will eat anything. Since he has a tendency to eat rocks, I would consider putting him in a crate when you aren't able to supervise him outside for his safety. I understand this may not be possible, just understand that he could obstruct if he eats a rock that is too large. In the meantime, I would feed him a high fiber canned food for a couple of days to help him pass this rock. I hope this helps!
