Dog puked after dewormer. Is it still effective or needs redosing?

Poor guy. If he vomited within 1 hr of giving the medication, he likely vomited it back up. However, if you are still unsure and didn't see the pill within the vomit, it is best to wait at least 3 days, give a second dose, then wait 2 weeks and give a 3rd dose just to make sure he gets the medication. It is not uncommon for dogs to vomit after medication and generally if it is more then 2 hours after the medication should have worked. As the food was undigested it may not have been absorbed as well as anticipated and it may be worth applying a different type of spot on medication, especially if you are in a heartworm affected area. Contact your local vets office for advice on the local risks and benefits of repeating or not

If your dog is sick three hours after giving the worming treatment, this should be sufficient time for the worming treatment to be absorbed. To err on the side of caution, if your dog is known to be infested with worms, it might be a good idea to re-treat him in a week's time with a different product. I'm not sure which product you are currently using, but I recommend using Drontal. You can get a Drontal tablet from your vet. If that doesn't make him sick, you can use it as your regular worming treatment.

Drontal Plus is extremely effective for treating tapeworms. However, I am concerned that if he vomited soon after giving the medication, there is a chance it did not absorb. I recommend that you call your veterinarian for a second dose - it will be safe to re-dose - just to be on the safe side! Next time give it at meal time so there is a lot of food in his stomach as this makes it less likely he will vomit the pill.

Hello, sorry to hear about Milo. make sure you are giving him the granules with food. Dogs with worms may have occasional vomiting as well. It would be hard to tell from this point if Milo's medication had enough time to reach the worms. This medication kills worms in the intestines but only small amount get absorbed. Therefore, it would be safest to administer an extra day of this medication with food, then to give an extra dose tonight. However, you should consult with your primary care veterinarian and see if they too recommend administering an extra day of this medication. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Some dogs can be very sensitive to certain ingredients but if she is vomiting more than 2 hours after the medication being given it is likely to have been effective. There are many brands and ingredients available other alternatives would be spot on medications such as advocate/stronghold (does not cover tapeworm) or 5 days of fenbendazole (parazole) which is normally tolerated better and covers all internal worms
