My dog threw up heartworm medicine hours later. Should I redose?

Poor guy. If he vomited within 1 hr of giving the medication, he likely vomited it back up. However, if you are still unsure and didn't see the pill within the vomit, it is best to wait at least 3 days, give a second dose, then wait 2 weeks and give a 3rd dose just to make sure he gets the medication. If your dog vomited more than an hour after the medication was given it is probably OK and in his system. However, if the dog vomited before an hour had passed then you will need to redose your dog with another round of dewormer. This medication is very safe and redosing should not cause a problem. Hello, sorry to hear about Milo. make sure you are giving him the granules with food. Dogs with worms may have occasional vomiting as well. It would be hard to tell from this point if Milo's medication had enough time to reach the worms. This medication kills worms in the intestines but only small amount get absorbed. Therefore, it would be safest to administer an extra day of this medication with food, then to give an extra dose tonight. However, you should consult with your primary care veterinarian and see if they too recommend administering an extra day of this medication. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It is not uncommon for dogs to vomit after medication and generally if it is more then 2 hours after the medication should have worked. As the food was undigested it may not have been absorbed as well as anticipated and it may be worth applying a different type of spot on medication, especially if you are in a heartworm affected area. Contact your local vets office for advice on the local risks and benefits of repeating or not

You can give him another full dose but I would wait a couple of days. That is very abnormal that the Heartgard would not have been digested fully and out of the stomach after 10 hours....... When you give it again I think you should give it with a piece of bread to help with digestion.

If there is no coughing or respiratory distress then I would not worry over a single instance if vomiting. If it continues or his appetite changes and coughing is noted then I would have him checked to see what is going on

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would need to know the milligrams (mg), how many tablets of each and how often he receives the medications to be 100% sure. But he likely will be fine! If he receives any of these medications twice daily just skip tonight's dose. Even if they are just once a day medications he will likely be fine.
