My dog threw up Drontal Plus. Is it still effective for tapeworms?

If your dog vomited more than an hour after the medication was given it is probably OK and in his system. However, if the dog vomited before an hour had passed then you will need to redose your dog with another round of dewormer. This medication is very safe and redosing should not cause a problem. If your dog is sick three hours after giving the worming treatment, this should be sufficient time for the worming treatment to be absorbed. To err on the side of caution, if your dog is known to be infested with worms, it might be a good idea to re-treat him in a week's time with a different product. I'm not sure which product you are currently using, but I recommend using Drontal. You can get a Drontal tablet from your vet. If that doesn't make him sick, you can use it as your regular worming treatment.

Hello, this medication is generally very well tolerated by our patients. Very rarely, this medication may cause some vomiting, diarrhea or decreased appetite. Otherwise, he should not have any side effects from this deworming. Hope this helps and best of luck.

The reason for the second deworming 3 weeks later is to kill any tapeworms that were still immature at the last deworming and were not yet sensitive to the dewormer or if she has gotten infected again since the last deworming. Drontal is a very safe medication with very few side effects since it only affects the parasites in the GI tract. Poor guy. If he vomited within 1 hr of giving the medication, he likely vomited it back up. However, if you are still unsure and didn't see the pill within the vomit, it is best to wait at least 3 days, give a second dose, then wait 2 weeks and give a 3rd dose just to make sure he gets the medication. Drontal is a very safe deworming tablet, so I would give Tofy one table. Doses of up to 10 times the recommended dose will usually only cause some nausea, so giving her a little bit extra will not likely result in any harm. I hope this helps!

Fred is such a cutie! I'm sorry he's been so ill lately, however. Given that he just stopped vomiting, I would hold off on giving him the Drontal for now. A side effect of Drontal can be GI upset, and it would be better to wait until he hasn't been vomiting for 48 hours before giving it to him.
