Why does my dog throw up after deworming? What are alternatives?

It is not uncommon for dogs to vomit after medication and generally if it is more then 2 hours after the medication should have worked. As the food was undigested it may not have been absorbed as well as anticipated and it may be worth applying a different type of spot on medication, especially if you are in a heartworm affected area. Contact your local vets office for advice on the local risks and benefits of repeating or not

If your dog is sick three hours after giving the worming treatment, this should be sufficient time for the worming treatment to be absorbed. To err on the side of caution, if your dog is known to be infested with worms, it might be a good idea to re-treat him in a week's time with a different product. I'm not sure which product you are currently using, but I recommend using Drontal. You can get a Drontal tablet from your vet. If that doesn't make him sick, you can use it as your regular worming treatment.

It is possible that he could have been more stressed at the first visit or had car sickness causing him to throw up the first one. If a different dewormer was used, this could have caused it as well. As long as Max is ok now, that is all that matters. I've had countless dogs vomit with the dewormer. Some just have more of a sensitive stomach than others and it could have been that maybe Max had a more sensitive GI system at the time of the first dewormer but the GI system became more developed and not as sensitive at the time of the second dewormer. If your dog vomited more than an hour after the medication was given it is probably OK and in his system. However, if the dog vomited before an hour had passed then you will need to redose your dog with another round of dewormer. This medication is very safe and redosing should not cause a problem. Poor guy. If he vomited within 1 hr of giving the medication, he likely vomited it back up. However, if you are still unsure and didn't see the pill within the vomit, it is best to wait at least 3 days, give a second dose, then wait 2 weeks and give a 3rd dose just to make sure he gets the medication. Drontal Plus is extremely effective for treating tapeworms. However, I am concerned that if he vomited soon after giving the medication, there is a chance it did not absorb. I recommend that you call your veterinarian for a second dose - it will be safe to re-dose - just to be on the safe side! Next time give it at meal time so there is a lot of food in his stomach as this makes it less likely he will vomit the pill.

Just like humans, there are many many causes of vomiting and some of the causes can be very serious. It could be related to the worming pill. If Alexa continue vomiting beyond 24 hours, she should be examined by the veterinarian.
