Is it safe to give my dog Vetprofen after he recently took Previcox?

I would not worry at this point but I suggest you not give her any more Vetprofen until 24 hours after the last dose. If you have some Pepcid (famotidine) 10mg on-hand you can give her one of those daily for the next few days to protect her stomach. If you notice any vomiting or not eating get her to your vet ASAP. Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to say it's safe to give an extra dose of medication without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. If he's in a lot of pain, I would give his vet a call now to discuss if they feel it's safe to give him some extra Previcox. Best of luck.

Good evening! As both carprofen and deramaxx are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, you are correct that they should not be used consecutively. I would withhold all medications until reaching out to your regular veterinarian or a poison control center (aspca or pet poison control) to discuss if any further treatment needs to be considered. You gave him a little over the daily recommended dose for once per day. He should be fine with this, do not give him anymore tonight, and tomorrow wait until 24 hours after you gave him the full pill and then start half twice daily. I hope this helps.

Hello. Do you mean Previcox for osteoarthritis in dogs? Some dogs may be sensitive to drugs like Previcox & they can cause significant stomach irritation, even ulcers. Ranitidine is an H-2 receptor antagonist that is used to decrease gastric acid & help treat exisitng ulcers & erosions. But ranitidine, or other H-2 antagonists, are not effective in preventing ulcers due to NSAIDS such as Previcox. So no, this is not generally recommended. I am sorry to hear about your concern for Hallie. It is unlikely with a one time extra dose of her previcox that we will see any major concerns. The most common side effect would be GI upset such as vomiting, decreased appetite, or diarrhea. I would just monitor her for these signs and contact your vet if they occur (you can try feeding a bland diet of plain cooked rice and boiled shredded chicken breast for a day if they occur, if they continue a vet visit is needed). Most likely she will have no symptoms after this one time extra dose.

Oh dear! This is a pretty significant overdose, and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Previcox have a fairly narrow margin of safety in dogs. Overdoses like this can result in severe stomach ulcers, internal bleeding, or even kidney failure. Since she got such a large dose, I would really recommend taking her to the vet right away for treatment. He/she can give her an injection to induce vomiting to help get any remaining pills out of her stomach before they can be absorbed, and may also recommend giving her IV fluids and starting medication to help protect her stomach to try and prevent any problems.
