Can I give my old dog ranitidine with Previcox for stomach issues?

Typically we don't like to give two different NSAIDs very close together but that is mostly when a dog has been on one long-term and we want to switch to another. Has only having one dose of previcox a few days is not really concerning. The main reason we worry is the potential for gastric ulceration. If you want to be cautious you could give him some omeprazole for a week but it would be best to contact your vet before adding in any other medications. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Possible side effects of NSAIDs include gastrointestinal side effects, such as ulcers in the stomach and harm to the kidneys. Some dogs are also just more sensitive to these side effects in general. The dark color of Nala's vomit is concerning, and I would be worried that she may be experiencing some of the side effects of Previcox. In the past in the UK we used to prescribe Antepsin syrup or tablets for gastric ulcers, in addition to analgesic medications (no antinflammatories !) and antiacids. It used to be a human medication so needed informed consent from the owners and compliance to the cascade (it could be used in cases where no other authorised animal medication was available). Unfortunately then there was a shortage in his availability and other medications had to be used on their own.. Antepsin, or sulcralfate, created a barrier between the ulcer and the acid content of the stomach. The antiacids now are still used, and their active drug is either omeprazole and/or ranitidine.

The nutricoat contains essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 6) which can be beneficial in cases of osteoarthritis (OA). The rantac is ranitidine, which is an acid reducer. Your vet may have found that using the mega flex and nutricoat can cause some mild tummy upset and they feel the rantac helps with that. I can only speculate though. If you have more specific questions regarding the medications prescribed I would recommend following up with your regular vet, even just a phone call could give you the clarification you seek.

Hello, yes you can very safely start using the Adequan for Stella's arthritis. I would very much prefer that you speak with Stella's vet before using the Prexicox. If you were my client, I would either recommend increasing the gabapentin ( if appropriate ) or using the newest NSAID called Galliprant. This newer medication is much gentler on the liver than anything we have ever had for managing arthritis in dogs. If this is not an option, then I would recommend using a liver neutraceutical like Denamarin to protect the liver as much as possible while on the Previcox. Oh dear! This is a pretty significant overdose, and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Previcox have a fairly narrow margin of safety in dogs. Overdoses like this can result in severe stomach ulcers, internal bleeding, or even kidney failure. Since she got such a large dose, I would really recommend taking her to the vet right away for treatment. He/she can give her an injection to induce vomiting to help get any remaining pills out of her stomach before they can be absorbed, and may also recommend giving her IV fluids and starting medication to help protect her stomach to try and prevent any problems.

A side effect of ranitidine is diarrhea, but I would give it to Oreo tomorrow on an empty stomach. If it does give him diarrhea again, then I would give your vet a call to let them know you are seeing this side effects, and the vet will let you know if they want you to continue with the ranitidine or want to try a different drug for Oreo.
