Dog in severe pain: Can I give extra Previcox before his last day?

Typically we don't like to give two different NSAIDs very close together but that is mostly when a dog has been on one long-term and we want to switch to another. Has only having one dose of previcox a few days is not really concerning. The main reason we worry is the potential for gastric ulceration. I can not advise increasing it. You can increase the gabapentin but be aware that will increase sedation. The dose he was started on is below the 10mg/kg every 8 hour starting dose. You can increase the gabapentin to 100mg every 8 hours, but watch for sedation. I wish you the best!

Hello. I am so sorry for your pet's diagnosis. While there is a dose of Tramadol available for dogs, we have now learned that it is not a great drug for pain relief. It is often used here as a multi-modal approach to pain using Tramadol with an NSAID & Gabapentin. With severe pain, a fentanyl patch may be required. You really need to visit with your veterinarian to make sure your pet is as pain free as possible for the rest of his life. You really need to consult with your veterinarian about the use of Adequan and the best dose for your dog. If his arthritis is severe than he may need to be given Novox on a daily basis. If you are concerned about possible side effects, try to find the lowest daily dose that still provides relief for him. You could also talk to your vet about adding in Tramadol and/or Gabapentin for more pain relief.

If Auggie has been seen recently by your veterinarian ( in the past 6 months ), they may agree to prescribe a short course of anti-inflammatory medications until he can receive a proper examination. All you can do is ask. Otherwise, try to keep him quiet & do not let him jump. Even after he is started on pain medication, you will need to curtail his activity so that he does not further injure his joints.
