My dog had surgery. Accidentally gave too much Vetprofen. Is he safe?

A one time dose of 100 Mg for a 68# dog is not likely to cause any problems. However, I would recommend skipping the next dose. The average dose is about 1 mg per pound every 12 hours, but some veterinarians will give a double dose every 24 hours. So, basically 100 Mg is within an appropriate 24 hour dose for him. 25mg of Vetprofen is a large dose for such a small dog. Recommended dosing is usually 12.5mg for a dog his size. I do not know how much medication he has already received at your vet but signs of toxicity usually occur with >20mg/kg doses. Basil could develop gastrointestinal signs including vomiting, GI bleeding, and diarrhea. He should be watched closely and he should not receive another dose for 24 hours or longer if signs of illness occur.

I would not worry at this point but I suggest you not give her any more Vetprofen until 24 hours after the last dose. If you have some Pepcid (famotidine) 10mg on-hand you can give her one of those daily for the next few days to protect her stomach. If you notice any vomiting or not eating get her to your vet ASAP. Typically we don't like to give two different NSAIDs very close together but that is mostly when a dog has been on one long-term and we want to switch to another. Has only having one dose of previcox a few days is not really concerning. The main reason we worry is the potential for gastric ulceration. If you want to be cautious you could give him some omeprazole for a week but it would be best to contact your vet before adding in any other medications. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

With NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) overdoses in dogs, the two things we're most concerned about are stomach ulcers and possible kidney damage. These usually occur with doses above 20 mg/kg, which for a 25 pound dog would be about 227 mg. Since Tootsie only got 50 mg total this morning (about 4.4 mg/kg), it's unlikely that you will see any serious issues related to this. To be safe, you should monitor her for the next 24 hours for any signs of a problem, such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not eating. If you have any concerns, I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic to be seen.

A kilogram is equal to 2.2 pounds. If I am reading your question correctly, you both gave 1.25 mg to your dog this morning. That is the total daily dose recommended for a dog your size. Even though the dosage should be divided into two doses given approximately 12 hours apart, it is absolutely fine in this situation that the entire daily dosage was given once. So, no, you have no reason to be concerned with what happened this morning. Your dog should be absolutely fine. Please do not give any doses for the rest of the day and tomorrow morning, go back to your regular 1/2 tablet every 12 hours dosing schedule. I hope I have given you the information you needed. The dose you gave him is exactly what he needs right at the high end of the dose range (if he is 49lbs like it says on your profile). It depends on how much and which type of anti-inflammatory drug administered. For example, if your veterinarian administered the exact same amount you just did of the same medication, that would be a high dose which could lead to side effects such as anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea and gastrointestinal ulcers. Depending on what your veterinarian administered and the total dosage, they could recommend starting Beau on a medication such as omeprazole to try to prevent a possible gastrointestinal ulcer. If it happened in the last 2 hours they could also consider inducing vomiting. Contacting your veterinarian for those specifics is the best way to go at this time. Good luck!
