My 9-month-old St. Bernard ate too many Previcox pills. Is it serious?

The main concern with an overdose of this drug is damage to the stomach and intestines. Behavior change is not expected, nor something that has been observed with this drug, so I'm not sure why he is acting skittish. Depending on how big of an overdose this was, he should probably be on some preventative treatment. I recommend contacting your veterinarian about this for further advice. The fact that he's eating/drinking OK and has normal stools are all good signs that he doesn't have any toxic effects at this time. However, signs of toxicity can be delayed a couple of days, so if he is vomiting, not eating, lethargic, or has diarrhea, then he will need to go to the vet. The most common side effect would be GI upset such as vomiting, decreased appetite, or diarrhea. The big problem with an overdose of meloxicam (or any other NSAID) is that it can definitively result in side effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration (which may manifest as black, tarry stools which basically means digested blood), kidney disease, liver disease and gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia. I advice that you take Katie to a veterinarian (perhaps a bit farther from you) for evaluation and further treatment. If it has been less than 2 hours, vomiting could still be induced which could make the outcome better. If there is no way possible you can do that then take her first thing in the morning tomorrow. Based on the amount Ginger ate, 200mg is around four times the maximum dose for proxetil. When a dog has an overdose of this drug, it causes vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, and bruising easily. While there have been safety studies showing the drug well-tolerated in dogs given 10 times the maximum dose, every dog does react different and it's best that she is evaluated and treated by a vet right away. I'd recommend taking her into an ER vet now for treatment to be safe. Because I can't see her in person to say for certain she will be ok, I will always recommend immediate treatment in these cases. Typically we don't like to give two different NSAIDs very close together but that is mostly when a dog has been on one long-term and we want to switch to another. Has only having one dose of previcox a few days is not really concerning. The main reason we worry is the potential for gastric ulceration. If you want to be cautious you could give him some omeprazole for a week but it would be best to contact your vet before adding in any other medications. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A 250mg tablet is over 5mg/kg which is close to the gastro-intestinal signs and ulceration. It is probably too late to induce vomiting but that would have been ideal to do right after she ate. It is best to have her seen by your Vet to start gastro-intestinal protectants like omeprazole, sucralfate and misoprostal to protect her GI tract from ulceration just to be safe.
